Today’s mix:
On The One And Two by Adam X 2001 Techno / Tech-House / EBM / House
From Brooklyn’s Adam X, who along with his brother Frankie Bones pioneered the American rave scene in the early 90s, comes this wildly unique, wide-ranging, rather subdued, and deeply personal mix that presents a collection of tracks that had made a considerable impact on Adam’s life up until the point that the mix was released. And one thing’s for certain: no one’s ever made a mix that’s quite like this one. Adam X, who now resides in Berlin, went back to techno’s source with some of these jams, like Front 242′s glorious “Controversy Between.” I mean, how many techno or mostly-techno mixes are you gonna find the EBM/industrial legends Front 242 on? I’m certainly here for it.
I don’t dig all of this mix, but I dig a lot of it. Adam X’s tastes are pretty damn unique, and while he keeps it mostly techno, he allows himself room to venture out to show you a thing or two or three from adjacent scenes or genres that you yourself have probably not dug that deep into. Cases in point, that aforementioned Front 242 song, and the weirdly charming and poetic “Kaltes Klares Wasser (Remix)” by Malaria! vs. Chicks On Speed.
Although I’m quite the digger of those ephemeral kinds of DJ mixes that are able to capture a perfect snapshot of a certain point in time, I think these decade-spanning mixes where DJs lay out their musical guts are also great and that we don’t get nearly enough of them. But maybe that’s because a lot of those mixes would end up sounding pretty much the same. However, for Adam X, that’s definitely not the case.
