You know how in Star Trek Rigel, for example, is part of the Federation with a native population in spite of in the real world being a thousand lightyears away and having been around for far too short a time to have evolved life even if it had planets in the habitable zone? That’s just one inconsistency among many, when comparing the Star Trek universe to our own. Well, I’ve come up with an explanation.

Remember “Hodgkin's Law of Parallel Planetary Development“? All those screwy alt-Earths Kirk and company were always stumbling across that were similar enough to our own world to have developed the English language...and logically must also have developed Greek and Latin.

So when they look at the stars, as they must, and give those stars names, as they must...what sort of names do you imagine they’d give them? Names like Rigel, Sirius, and Aldebaran, perhaps? After all, they’ve no way of knowing those are taken.

This, then, is my proposal: the reason the Federation’s star charts do not match our own is that the Federation’s Earth is not our Earth.

The Washington Post’s top fact-checker has given the GOP four “Pinocchios” for repeated false claims about federal funding for IRS personnel under President Biden’s administration.

Citing a series of comments made by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) and others, the Post’s Glenn Kessler labeled the GOP’s promise to “defund 87,000 IRS agents” a “zombie claim,” describing it as one that keeps “rising from the dead no matter how often they have been fact-checked.”

On Monday, the House passed legislation rescinding an IRS funding boost signed into law last year. The Family and Small Business Taxpayer Protection Act was a key part of the Republican platform ahead of the 2022 midterm elections and promises to rescind “unobligated balances of amounts appropriated or otherwise made available” to the IRS from the Democrats’ Inflation Reduction Act.

Republicans have repeatedly falsely described the 87,000 new IRS employees, who would be added over the course of a decade, as “agents.”
