Victory Monument at 35th and King Dr. is dedicated to the 137 members of the 8th Infantry of the Illinois National Guard that were lost during World War I. The unit was activated from their armory in Bronzeville and served in Europe under French command. It was the only African-American unit in the then segregated US Army with African-American officers. It saw action until the Armistice took effect November 11,1918.
