You know, now that 90′s shooters are making such a big resurgence lately it feels weird calling them “90′s FPS.” I almost think we should come up with a name for the... sub-genre I guess you would call it? You know how fans of Devil May Cry and Bayonetta style games call them “character action games?”
I guess we could go back to using “DOOM clone” but that always sounded kind of dismissive to me.
What do you guys think?
I just wanna take a moment to do some free shilling -
You know what’s great? There’s not just one, but THREE indie FPS games in development that are excellent tributes to the 90′s golden age of FPS games. All three of these games completely nail what made the shooters of that era so damn fun.
If you love 90′s FPS as religiously as I do, please consider checking out each of these games so you might consider supporting the developers making these kickass throwbacks. I’ve played each one of them, and all three are a blast. They’re all still in development, but I can personally vouch that what’s available for all three games so far is just awesome. I want these games to do well so more developers know there’s a market for these fast-paced, no nonsense, exploration heavy shooters.
If you love DOOM/Quake you’ll love DUSK. If you love Heretic and Hexen then Amid Evil feels like the closest thing to a Heretic sequel we’ll ever probably get. If you love the build engine shooters with their one-liner spewing protagonists, interactive levels, and humor then Ion Maiden will feel right at home.

What would a game set in ancient Rome be without lions? New enemy for Caesar’s Revenge. They attack anything in their vicinity - including civilians!
