90s Wedding Gowns Part 6 - Strapless

The strapless dresses were probably the most difficult of all the dresses for me to research, because my memory regarding such dresses was kinda fuzzy for the 90s.  My memories of early 2000s Sims wedding gowns kinda blurs with what 1990s strapless wedding dresses.  Even worse, there are enough strapless wedding gowns for female Sims out there to sink a virtual battleship!  However, I used research so we could narrow down what would look authentic for this era. 

I noticed several features of 90s strapless gowns, vs. those from the early 2000s (or even the 2010s for that matter).  The minimalist trend made them very simple in appearance, save for some minor, pretty decorations like embroidery and beads.  There were often no distinct waistlines, or if there were, they were much lower than today’s “natural waist” or the retro-50s/60s waistline everyone puts on their dresses now.  The skirts were also not as poofy as they got to be after 2000. 

From a historical perspective, strapless dresses were not commonly worn by brides in the 1990s, but they did exist.  Most brides would opt for the more elaborate styles (which have been shown in the last few entries).  For authenticity, if your 90s Sim bride is getting married with one of these on, chances are, either your Sim likes simplicity and being different, or she lives in the late 90s, like 1997-1999, because that’s around the time we started seeing more and more strapless gowns, and their popularity was growing, but didn’t explode until after the Millennium. 

This is Trapping’s Minimalist Wedding Dress, which seems to resemble some authentic 90s gowns I saw in image searching.  Can be found at MTS.

This is called the Beo Wedding Dress 02, converted from Sims 3.  Zeussims first converted it, but the dress (as well as its sister conversions) have had tweaks made in the greater community, due to their popularity.  Dee-Dee added fat and pregnant morphs, and Meduza lowered the poly-count on the shoes.

Another 3t2 conversion, which can be found in Reply #67 on Garden of Shadows.  Note: The person who made the dress says that the necklace is not part of the outfit.

Like I said earlier, Maxis provided a strapless gown of its own through the Celebrations Stuff Pack.  It is this dress:

Dee-Dee made lovely retextures of the Maxis Hourglass Dress.  Mikexx did recolors for these as well.

I’m delighted to show you some of Sims York City’s stuff.  Their outfits are spectacular!  This is called the “Cream Flowers” wedding dress.

Don’t be fooled by the orange color of this dress.  There’s a white recolor, making it perfect for weddings, as this swatch shows:

This is the 3t2 Beach Wedding Dress, originally converted by Rented-Space, and recolored by Mikexx. 

I made this collage of strapless wedding gowns on Lidiqnata’s website.  I cut out the pictures of dresses that weren’t strapless.  These should all work for a 90s Sims 2 game.  Note: the pictures are dodgy on this website, so don’t be surprised if you can’t see them immediately.

This lovely gown reminds me of sea foam, particularly with the ripples sewn into the skirt.  It can be found here by itself, but I do recommend you get the whole set.  Most of the other recolors are white with ombre coloring, where the white fades into another color in the lower half of the skirt.  Any of these would look nice at a 90s Sim wedding.  The mesh can be found here.

I saved the second simplest for last.  It can be found here, you can find the entire set of dresses here, and thankfully, the mesh exists in the game already.

90s Wedding Gowns Part 3 - Off-the-Shoulder

Hey guys!  I’m back :).  Took a little break because of real life stuff, but I’ve returned. 

This time, we have off-the-shoulder Sims dresses that would look great for Sim brides living in a 1990s game :D.  Maxis has one such dress that not only would look authentic in this era, it brings about a nostalgia factor too. 

Instead of the tiny thumbnail from that fun defaults website, I’m gonna use this picture instead.  This particular dress has a nostalgia factor for me, because it was the first wedding dress available in Sims 1!  It was what your female Sims whooshed into when getting married in the backyard, isn’t that sweet?  Later on, some expansion pack came along that allowed you to pick the formal outfits for your Sims to wear for that.  So this might actually be a callback to the very first Sims game :)

I found some recolors for this in various places.  This one is the prettiest:

It’s called the Grace Gown, made by Bunny. 

I would call this recolor a bit iffy, but I’ve seen brides wear crazier designs on their dresses than this.  You can find it on Page 4 for Formal Clothing at Parsimonious.

This last pair of recolors is a simple set from MTS. 

I love these Just A Formality dresses Eltanin made :D.  They come with 4 textures; plain white, textured white, plain gold, textured gold.  Mermaid style dresses were around in both the 80s and 90s, don’t worry :).  I actually found 2 mermaid-style dresses that would have worked for the 80s, but the meshes were missing :( so I didn’t post them.  These, however, do have their meshes.

I love this wedding gown MDP made.  She apparently had a lot of fun after creating plain versions of her Day of the Dead dress conversions, so we have quite a few off-the-shoulder iterations on those, including this nice, simple style dress.  

This version has a less-poofy skirt.  It comes as part of a huge collection of off-the-shoulder formalwear MDP made later. 

This last pretty number can be found on this page, at Mirkwood Sims.  It’s kinda primitive-looking compared to the above dresses, but I like the style very much. 

While the mesh is included in the Mirkwood version of the dress, I still feel some nostalgia and would suggest visiting the zombie version of RoseSims for the original dress.  It’s a pretty pale pink, has the mesh, and you can still download it!

90s Wedding Gowns Part 5 - Long Sleeves & Short Sleeves

Every era has brides that want simplicity in the designs of their wedding gowns, and the 90s was no different.  Not all of them wanted something elaborate, or something that was not built for those of us who are “blessed” on top.  That’s where these gowns come in :)

I love this dress :)  It reminds me of the one Lucy wore at the very end of While You Were Sleeping. I know they call this a vintage 1940s gown, and I have no doubt such a style was worn back then, but this style could work in an early-to-mid-90s Sims game/story too.  The mesh is from ALL ABOUT STYLE, and it comes with “Rose’s Evening Dress.“  (I have no idea why they stuck Rose’s dresses in with the Victorian women’s stuff, considering her character lived in the Edwardian Era when Titanic sank).  It’s the red gown Rose wore when she almost jumped off the ship and met Jack for the first time.  

This dress reminds me of a scene from the movie Sleepless in Seattle, where Annie (played by Meg Ryan) is trying on her grandmother’s dress, and it looks a lot like the one up above.  It’s a sweet, modest gown that a shy Sim might like to wear to her wedding.  Note: the flower crown and veil are not included.  You can find it as part of the ”Marry Me? Like an Angel“ set at Le Chat Noir.

I should point out that the 2 dress styles above were not super-popular during this decade, but some brides did wear them.

Much as I love this crystal blue dress, I’m a little bit dubious about the waistline, because it seems more 2010s than 1990s, but perhaps you could call it an “empire waist” dress or something.  Maybe the bride wanted to get married in a frosty winter setting, who knows.  Can be found here.

Now it’s time for the short-sleeved dresses :)  I partially blame that 90s trend where a lot of women started wearing peasant tops with cap sleeves, and that sorta led to some bridal gowns having similar style of sleeves.

I know I’ve posted this dress before, but for those who missed it the first time, here it is again.  Can be found at Boutique Imaginary. 

I found this cute dress at a Vietnamese website that has been really handy.  It’s kind of an unofficial repository for certain Sims 2 mods that aren’t available anymore, but it’s random what you’ll find in there.  You will need to scroll down to Post #374 to find this dress. 

I found this dress at Lidiqnata’s website.  It took some crazy internet gymnastics, but I got the images to work on that page.  Your experience may differ.  It’s part of the group Bride Dresses Part VI, and the download is lumped in with two pretty strapless dresses.

The last offering in this post also comes from Lidiqnata’s website.  It’s called the “White 02 Dress” and can be found at the very top of the page, on the left side.  (Be warned, the pictures might not show up).  Honestly, I really don’t see this as a Victorian dress in any shape or form, but it would make a fine gown for a 1990s Sim bride.

Anyway, I’m almost done with posting bridal gowns for Sims from these 2 great decades.  Just one more to go after this :)

90s Wedding Gowns Part 1

I promised I’d include 1990s gowns for Sim brides getting married in this decade.  However, due to the volume of dresses I found, I’m gonna just put some previews on here for the submissions to come. 

From what I could tell, both from research online and my own experience as a kid (I grew up in the 90s), bridal fashion underwent a dramatic transformation during this decade. 

Early 90s (1990-1993-ish)

Bridal gowns still mostly resembled the over-the-top, fairy-tale-esque styles of the 80s, since the 90s hadn’t really started to define its look yet, and wedding gowns were no exception.  So if your Sims are getting married in the early 90s, it’s okay to still use those crazy “pseudo-Victorian” and over-the-top styles. 

Mid-90s (1994-1997)

I think this was when the Minimalist styles started taking off, though I’m not 100% sure, but these styles will look just fine in your 90s Sims game.

Spaghetti Straps started becoming all the rage, and this is where that surprise I mentioned in my last post was all about.  Turns out that once again, Maxis actually has some wedding gowns that would work perfectly in this game, in fact, 4 of them would!

I found other non-Maxis dresses with spaghetti straps, but I wanted you all to know the game has provided, once more :D.  They can be found here.

Off-the-Shoulder dresses with simpler designs were worn during this time.  Maxis again provided a style you all can use from your Sims game :)

There are other custom dresses like this, but the Maxis one actually has a bit of a history for those of you who have played since the beginning.  I’ll elaborate in a later post.

Halter Top dresses started being worn in this era.

The Sleeveless style came back, sort of a callback to the 60s.  I’ll elaborate in a later post.

But fear not, bridal gowns with sleeves were worn in the 90s.  Some brides liked wearing short, cap sleeves like this:

Late 90s (1997-1999)

This was when the Strapless Prom-Dress styles became popular, and continued on past the Millennium. 

Like I said earlier, Maxis provided a dress that would go great with the strapless prom style:
