In the same issue week of October 4, the song debuted on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart at number 18.

Eventually the song reached its peaked within the top 10 ten weeks later after its first charting at number 8 on December 6, 1997.

The song also peaked within the top ten on the Rhythmic charts at number 8 on November 15, 1997. On the Billboard Dance charts the song peaked within the top 20 at number 18 on February 28, 1998.

On October 21, 1997 "The One I Gave My Heart To" was certified Gold by the RIAA for sales of over 900,000 copies sold.
