When my son (now 4) was a baby, he was enamored with elephants - watching National Geographic videos of them, cuddling his stuffed animal elephant until it was flat, and seeing them at @louisvillezooofficial every week. I think his fascination with elephants is what truly jump started @the_envirominimalist_dad and I getting involved in conservation however we could. @96elephants has been an excellent resource for us learning more about protecting wildlife and fighting poaching, even from our home in the American Midwest. Our world loses 96 elephants every single day. That's more than 35,000 elephants each year. At the current rate, there's a chance that my son's children may never see elephants. Thanks to the efforts of the @zoos_aquariums and the Louisville Zoo, as well as other conservationists, we may change the course of history if we all work together...even those of us who live in suburbia, like Nick and I, can do something. Everyday, 96 Elephants die from people hunting them for their tusks. Their tusks help them in their daily lives with eating, to get food, etc. They are made of Ivory, so if you see in any jewelry of Ivory, DO NOT PURCHASE IT. Having Elephants die like this is uncanny and inhumane. People like this are sick and don't need to be hunting. Animals are innocent and don't deserve this. Especially wildlife. An insatiable lust for ivory products in the Asian market makes the illegal ivory trade extremely profitable, and has led to the slaughter of tens of thousands of African elephants. Between 2010 and 2014, the price of ivory in China tripled, driving illicit poaching through the roof. If the elephants are to survive, the demand for ivory must be drastically reduced. As of 2011, the world is losing more elephants than the population can reproduce, threatening the future of African elephants across the continent. Bull elephants with big tusks are the main targets and their numbers have been diminished to less than half of the females. Female African elephants have tusks and are also killed, which has a terrible effect on the stability of elephant societies, leaving an increasing number of orphaned baby elephants. As of 2016, there are still more African elephants being killed for ivory than are being born. . . elephant populations continue to decline.
