Above is a picture of the kidney dialysis machine that was invented by Willem Kolff in 1944.  This is a major accomplishment in the field of medicine and technology both, and was surprisingly made of majority salvaged parts.  With this machine it was now possible to help filter and individuals blood if their own body was unable to do so due to kidney disease or kidney failure.  This invention has obviously been looked into and improved considerably since this model, but it left a heavy impact in the medical field.  He later went on to research other means of using artificial organs.

Pictured above is the chemical structure of the substance nylon.  It is a synthetic plastic that was created by Wallace Carothers in order to replace silk if needed.  It has gone into many practical applications ranging from the everyday such as in toothbrushes, ropes, and combs to the military applications of things such as parachutes, which were especially important during world war II.  It was so valuable because the nature of its structure makes it extremely durable under most normal conditions, leaving it in so many uses today.

Pictured above is the chemical structure of insulin.  This was discovered in 1922 in Toronto by Dr. Fredrick Banting and his team of doctors and lab assistants.  This is clearly a monumentally important discovery and is still used today in the treatment of diabetes patients.  Basically what it is used for, is if the body should stop producing insulin in the pancreas on its own, the insulin can be injected to avoid toxic levels of glucose in the body.  All doctors involved were later honored for the discovery.

One of the inventions of the 1920's was the band-aid.  While everyone at this time probably knows what a band-aid is, they probably don't know the significance of them.  At the time Earl Dickson's band-aids were one of the first major improvements to the sterilization of wounds.  They were not a big success until after a publicity event in which Dickson gave away band-aids to boy scout troops which really showed their usefulness.  Now, there was a bandage that was composed of the same gauze and adhesive padding that could stick to active areas of the body to help prevent infection.

Above is a picture of Garrett Morgan.  He invented one of the first effective models of the gas mask which was used in a variety of ways.  What started off as a device intended to help firefighters on the job was eventually taken to a much higher level of application after further development and used in the battlefields of world war I. The mask used a wet sponge to filter out particulates from the air and stabilized the air temperature as well.

Martin Luther King Jr.

Great man, can not express that enough.  He did  great things in the civil rights movement but was also a great minister in the church and very religious man.  He talked about civil-peace, much like Jesus Christ he would not fight and when he spoke at rallies he always emphasized religion.
