Chaplain George W. Prioleau was one of the few “ Buffalo soldiers ” commissioned as officers within the U.S. Army . He attended #wilberforceuniversity in #ohio , graduating with a Bachelor in Divinity in 1884. President#grovercleveland appointed him as Chaplain of the #usarmy Army’s #9thcavalry at the rank of #captain on April 25, 1895. He served with the 9th Cavalry for nearly 21 years. In 1915, he was transferred to the #10thcavalry & then to the #25thCavalry where he was promoted to #major . He retired in 1920. One story says that they got their name from the texture of their, another that they were called Buffalo Soldiers for their braveness in fighting. They were active from 1866-1951. In the beginning they were operating between a rock and hard place. Here they were marginalized themselves and they had to battle with Native Americans from time to time. They fought in the American Indian Wars, Spanish–American War, Philippine–American War, Mexican Border War, World War I, and World War II. Their participation in the American Indian wars is where some have come to criticize them. The history is a very complex one because we're looking at their role with the US government and Native Americans. Some of those tribes that they fought with were some of the same ones that also fought on the same side as the Confederacy.
