“ stop worrying — i can feel you worrying , ” vera said softly . “ just come join me and look at the stars . ” her voice shook as she blinked back tears. “ 𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆 . ” desperation was soaked in her broken tone — a silent plea to just let her be. how had this become her norm ? to be so overwhelmed, to have her best friend find her with tear stained cheeks — the after effect of yet another panic attack. hands still shaking as she gripped her fists into the grass she laid on. it was cold, the winter season peaking through, and yet here under the stars, lying in her backyard, was the first time vera felt like she could take a lungful of air that night.

her food was probably burned by now, still boiling atop the stove. she hardly recalled teddy coming by, seeing the state of her and telling her to get some air. he was smart — he probably turned the gas off. vera didn’t deserve his 𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔.

tears welled up again, and though teddy of all people had already seen her weep, she stayed strong. she tried not to show 𝒘𝒆𝒂𝒌𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔. what was she going to do come spring ? how was she meant to rule a country all alone ?

vera felt teddy’s presence as he laid down next to her on the grass and she exhaled, her fingers very gently finding his wrist, finding his 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒃𝒆𝒂𝒕. she let herself breathe. he couldn’t take away the obligations — the impending 𝒅𝒐𝒐𝒎 of her future. she was the only one who could control that. but tonight she wasn’t alone, and vera sighed shakily, eyes focused on the glimmering lights decorating the night sky above. “ thank you. ”
