you know something i find really interesting and cool about martha wells' writing is that she often tackles the issue of technology and the dangers that come with it but those dangers don't actually come from technology itself, which is what most sci-fi writers would do. the dangers come from how we, as a deeply flawed society, use and abuse technology.

it's the most realistic approach to speculative fiction about technology imo, and it also gets at what makes speculative fiction great—addressing concerns of now (capitalism, bias, exploitation) via fictional ideas of the future/an alternate world. technology itself is not dangerous nor antithetical to human survival, but the ways we use technology can be destructive. A.I. is not inherently evil or volatile, but if you program bots with bias (which you inevitably will, because humans are biased) or give what are essentially cyborgs intense trauma and no autonomy, then you are going to put people and beings generally (including said bots and cyborgs!) in danger.
