to me, grace's house on erid looks like it was inspired by organic modern/japandi interior design styles with industrial elements. which makes sense from a set designer's stand point because it has to look like it was made with both natural materials and metals.

but i have so many questions about it. is this grace's interior design style? is this how interior design is on erid? did grace and rocky set up a joint pinboard and spend the trip chucking jpegs in there? he has so many vases, are they gifts from the eridians? is it an eridian cultural thing? did grace take up pottery?

i also adore how many windows he has and how big they are. the house is physically small (which makes sense, grace doesn't seem like the type of guy to want a bigger space than he needs) but having so many large windows makes it feel bigger than it is. it also allows him to enjoy the ocean views, provide lighting (it's possible he has recessed lighting, but i didn't see any lamps), and help him feel less trapped. after being kidnapped and forced to live in such a small space for so long, it would be good for him to feel physically safe but not contained, and this is a great way to do it.

while i know he doesn't really gaf about boundaries or have a human sense of shame like that i do think that rocky realising that he's come to find grace perversely, sincerely desirable and developed an entirely reasonable but still uncomfortably intense degree of starvation for physical touch during their extended confinement together works better if he's not immediately fine and okay with it. i mean, he literally lives in a glass house, and the only time he could reasonably get away with processing his uncharted new feelings (up to you if that's a euphemism or not) is while watching over the already precariously easy to disturb sleep cycles of a fellow PTSD survivor who does have certain hangups and may not even share his attraction. let's all hope and pray that eridians don't ovulate or he's in for a hideously miserable four years on the return trip to erid.

she is so kind is the thing.... even as she has to make the most harrowing decisions in human history and play the ruthless dictator for the greater good, even as she literally kidnaps several scientists to work on the project, there are so many scenes where Stratt is looking out for the people on the project and empathising with them and affirming the importance of their work. Dimitri, Lamai, Grace (multiple times), Leclerc! She and him especially are as far apart as two people can ideologically be, they literally spend their first meeting patronising one another, but SHE'S the one with her hand on his shoulder, comforting him, when he bursts into tears as the strike on Antarctica is carried out.

She has low tolerance for bullshit (they're saving the world here), but if Grace as our narrator is constantly grumbling about how much of an asshole she is, it's because he's the inciting incident of 90% of her frustrated outbursts by acting like a whiny toddler who can't keep his trap shut for a single second. Even then, she clearly values his frankness and input, she sees him as someone she can share the load on her shoulders with, she just... enjoys his company? in spite of her attempts at detachment? and even indulges him in his goofiness and informality (unprompted Terminator reference my beloved)

She's uptight and everyone's boss with unfathomable power and authority over them, but no-one else in the book has quite the perception of her that Grace has. The primary crew is straight up disappointed to hear she won't be joining them for the Hail Mary's launch watch-party. They like and respect her well enough.

I don't know man. I'm on my 5th reread of the book and my counter for the movie is in the double digits, and the more I mull it over, the more I think Sandra Hüller's performance and book!Stratt might not be as far apart as people say. Book!Stratt just had to be filtered through the lenses of Grace as the main character, and book!Grace fundamentally doesn't see her as a person.
