If you are a sucker for nostalgia then Voltron: From the Ashes is a must-read title for you. Literally from the very first page in this comic, Voltron gives the phrase “Blast from the Past” a whole new perspective. Set 200 years after the original Voltron crew’s final battle against the Druule fleet, Planet Arus has gone into peace-time. The monks of Arus keep the Voltron spirit alive and well by training young cadets in case Voltron is needed once more. Lo and behold, the need arises very quickly as Haggar, The Mother of Monsters re-awakens with a new crew of would-be conquerors called The Ra’Haarg (who kind of look like rejects from the Thundercats…but I digress).
In issue #5, Jayce and the all new Voltron Force gets down to the nitty gritty and starts bashing Robeasts left and right in what is their initial jump into Voltron, and they prove themselves to be quite a formidable squadron. At the end of the battle Arus is saved, Voltron does that kick-ass pose it always does, and the enemies get sent packing for their eventual return. The most interesting part of this issue is the telling of the backstory leading up to Voltron’s demise and rise. Apparently, after the original Voltron crew’s final battle, Keith (pilot of the Black Lion) was the only member to survive. In the aftermath he becomes sort of a priest spreading the gospel of Voltron and creating a legacy that endures for centuries.
The creative team is a sound one for this title. Blacky Shepherd draws one hell of a Voltron, and Cullen Bunn does a phenomenal job in bridging past and present by smoothly passing the torch to a new crew, giving readers both young and old a reason to salivate.
