read between the lines dialogue and characters sharing a knowing look when someone says a thing that YOU KNOW MEANS SOMETHIN DEEPER is always good shit, i love when creators respect their audiences’ ability to pick up on that shit instead of spelling it out for them
In my opinion, that's why Kazuya Minekura becomes such an effective writer. Putting aside the fact that lots of manga is sort of lost in translation, she’s simply a very strong (especially dialogue, or lack thereof) writer - not just a strong mangaka - and that sets her above a lot of her peers.
I’d suggest to anyone who wanted to get started to give it a solid try until Volume 4 - when she first started (almost 20 years ago), she stumbles a bit and it can seem a little typical. Having had 1-4 bought for me, I kept going and by the time 4 comes around, all pretenses are lost. The characters are whole, the more melodramatic angst begins to dissipate and she starts doing what she does best - character work. At it’s heart, Saiyuki is more character work than anything else. The plot, while compelling and rooted in mythology, is almost incidental. I hadn’t read a better manga, in that regard, before and I haven’t read one since.
