He can't be in sunlight because he'll boil alive, and he decided this was a Bad Thing for a successful integration into society. So he studied for almost a century to figure out how to create a field of arcane night around himself up to a 15 ft radius, but it leaves him mega vulnerable to attacks because he dies if he loses focus.

Also, his brood had been attributed to the creation of vampires before they were hunted into near exinction (:

Also, he now serves tea because he is polite and mostly civil. (And definitely doesn't understand a lot of human interaction or incentives)
