The Willet Pot Still. Cool bottle. Brings back memories.
I bought it yesterday for my wife’s sister who wants it for a Christmas present for her husband. She was telling me, once she bought this “very special” bourbon for him on recommendation of a guy working in a liquor store but she couldn’t find it anymore. She started to describe the bottle and I said I knew the one and would look for it.
IMO this one is an example of form over function. A store owner once admitted, in the retail market, it was known as $20 whiskey in a $20 bottle with the bottle being the better value. I agreed then. It’s $50 now.
I’d tried it at a Willett tasting along with other Willet offerings. Afterwards, I wrote about it on a Foodie Blog, admitting I was disappointed to find it a “pedestrian” bourbon at best. Oh you should have seen the response I got. People don’t like anyone telling them their favorite bourbon isn’t good. Of course that’s not what I wrote. I said, I didn’t think much of it.
Eventually (years later) I was kicked off the blog. The blog owner and local food reviewer assured everyone my account could be reinstated. I’m sure all I had to do was kiss his ass and promise not to stab at his sacred cows. Lol, the one sacred cow loved that Pot Still. I never logged back on, he’d done me a favor. I don’t play well with people who don’t comprehend the difference between opinion and fact.
Anyway, I bought this bottle of whiskey for someone and though I’d never recommend the whiskey, maybe he will like it. If he asks me, I’ll tell him, I think it’s a cool bottle.
