Whatever the reason, here was the solution. He owed her a gift. She'd guilt him into spending time with her. Underhanded? Maybe. Did she care? Right now? Nah. She considered it a very convenient opportunity.

For skipping out on a gift, she'd tell him he owed her snacks at Jericho's. A call back to their first ‘not date’ and, hey, seafood. And then they'd have a race, and she'd make it all tricks and loops, and they'd have fun. And then he'd see that everything was ok. And maybe, just maybe, she could recreate that moment they'd had on some random roof after her first dive flight when she was fourteen going on fifteen or something like it.

Next time they meet, when he drops something off at the Last Drop, she springs her trap “You got me no present.” She dials up her disappointment, hunching her shoulders and pouting.

He looked panicked for a moment, his hand going to his pocket. “Um, well, you see, I left it at home, I'm sorry. Let me make it up to you?” She's possibly enjoying his squirming a bit much and can't hold back her smile. “Can we get snacks at Jericho's?"

He side eyes her. “Is this some elaborate plan to get extra dumplings and calamari?"
