Song Review: Amy Ray feat. Sarah Jarosz - “A Mighty Thing”
Amy Ray works out her conflicting feelings about religion on “A Mighty Thing.”
Accurately described in a statement as “punkabilly,” the hybrid, acoustic-electric track features Sarah Jarosz on mandolin and harmony vocals and heralds the Sept. 16 release of the Indigo Girl’s solo LP If it all Goes South.
Don’t fear the gun, fear the man/that’s what they taught me when I was young/don’t hate the sinner, hate the sin/I add it up, it don’t make sense, Ray sings on the opening stanza.
Later, Ray sings about being scared as hell and holding her breath while being baptized. But she’s working all that out in song.
“I needed to get past the negative parts of my church life,” Ray said.
“But, I will never lose hold of the positive things, and all the teachers that taught me about the true gospel of love in every aspect of my life.”
Good therapy. And “A Mighty Thing” is a good song to boot.
