"If you can't turn down anything then you are coming with me on Sunday."
I was tricked by my own new outlook on life, "Laura's playing with her indie band" I hadn't heard this particular one, so I stopped just agreeing to the event and started looking forward to it. After visiting the FB page, I realised it wasn't just your usual ragtag group of Brisbane bands on circulation but maybe something with a little more spice and by spice I mean nudity and stripping.
After fleeing home, running out to a yelling mother due to washing unhung, I jumped into a car stocked with equipment, I was to be a roadie and that worked out well as I got in for free. But at first the lady asked what we played, unsure of what to do we looked aimlessly at her until a girl in the band explained we were the doting roadie-groupies. Luckily, we she didn't demand payment. The venue was behind Alhambra and was called Coniston Lane, which was hastily spray-painted over the old Woodland sign. We arrived to another band setting up, collectively they looked like the filled out the tag 'swag' on tumblr or as if their band had a budget, 70% of it would have been spent on Vans. What I first thought to be their own visuals turned out to be the sound peoples choice of background which was adventure time projected onto what was a trippy screensaver. Which actually made the whole stage seem cool and stylish but not serious in your usual hipster pretenious way. .
We ate at grill'd where I saw the patrick screaming chalk picture but I forgave it because one of the workers was a massive babe, he was all youthful and brown eyed and maybe a little clumsy which rounded out the package. The vocalist vomited (in the bathroom) after eating a really rich mushroom and she left her wallet after going to vomit so the dude ran after us.
Laura got a parking fine, only 75 dollars but we all saw it coming. She wasn't too pissed so we went back to the venue and then watched a guy assemble a stripper's pole, we ended up helping him take it out back and asked him if his job profession was 'pole technician', he didn't get the joke.
The stripper's pole wasn't enough, all of a sudden breasts were bared, the largest number and sizes of breasts I had ever seen in real life. Apparently, along with bands, body art was to be displayed. (The number of stolen glances by those would couldn't decide between public display and 'is it okay to look?' were outrageous) It was amazing, one lady got a clown, a scary ass clown with her boobs serving as cheeks which made it frightening and very 3d. One lady's nipple were so hard they like the top of salami.
Some english guy played and he was both babing and a good vocalist, but with only a guitar and the early crowd, people only half cared and he became pub noise midway through his set. Laura's band waited until their rostered time as the english dude started early, and they played to a bigger and developing crowd.
They are my favourite of Laura's many bands and have really oddly cool electronics. They are like an all girl's tribute to the smiths after realising they'd rather sound like tegan and sara. They played a good set, no one danced but there were just enough people to cover all the seats in the place, so they didn't get dance floor overflow. Everyone should listen to Foxsmith on facebook, that'd be cool.
After their set we got to watch a few other people who were quite good, a girl who was spraypainting outside recognized me from uni and we had an awkward moment of 'i know what you study but not your story' so I just ran away. Some dude with amazing big hair and just general good-lookingness got spraypainted as this hue rainbow thing and it was awesome. I hung out with some really cool people, all with a level of music kids cool that you cannot fake. I will definitely go see them again because I actually like the people and the music. Who would have guessed? And I never got mad about not having seen doctor who, I just came home and watched it on ABC so I think if anything is a good measure of a good day is, that is. I didn't once think, I'd rather be home.
I rate this a 8/10, I enjoyed it overall, didn't once hate anyone except the annoying MC who knew she talked to much and proceeded to talk about that without any sense of irony. Lacking points being no good looking dudes talked to me, just doing their creative thing elsewhere. This whole day actually makes me look forward to new social outings, so success Enquire within.
