The rain was pouring down on her umbrella. Fitting, M’gann thought to herself. Rain was fine weather for a funeral. As if the sky was commiserating with the mourners. All two of them. M’gann reached out and rested a hand on Conner’s shoulder. She wasn’t weeping, but she had gotten a bit misty eyed.
They stood on the far waterline in District X. M’gann had constructed a sort of raft out of driftwood and fallen branches collected over the past month. This was, for better or for worse, not an unexpected occasion. They had already pushed the craft out onto the water and were standing there, simply watching as she floated out to sea. She needed to be far enough from city limits before they lit her up, after all.
“Conner,” M’gann started. “I thought we could each say a few words before…” She paused. It felt indecent to say aloud what she knew was only minutes away now. M’gann forced a smile. “I’ll go first if that’s alright. Minnie taught me many things about patience, about fortitude and finding silver linings.” M’gann squeezed Conner’s shoulder gently. “But I the day I met Minnie I was reminded of how important it is to want something. Great or small, wanting something, helps drive us through strange and difficult times. Wanting Minnie drove me to action and into the life of a dear friend and for that I will always be grateful.”
She looked to Conner.
