The Office - a Short Guide

Season 1 - A lot like the British version, tonally much darker and cringier than the rest of the show. Has some good moments, but I find it better now that I’m used to the show. Many people skip it, and I can understand that.

Seasons 2-3 - The best the show is. I pretty much recommend every episode, and the Jim/Pam story is baked within. The end of season 3 is kind of a good stopping point, too -- the rest of the series feels like a sequel.

Seasons 4-5 - The quality of the show is still pretty high, and while it kind of veers into sitcomy schtick, is still rather entertaining. I recommend all of the episodes from these seasons. There’s a lot of great Jim and Pam stuff in every episode of these seasons, too, though of a different flavor.

Season 6-7 - The show starts to show its decline. I think 7 is stronger than 6, but there are a lot of meh episodes (especially in 6). Jim and Pam get some great moments sprinkled within - but the show starts to become obsessed with Andy and Erin (and Gabe, god, Gabe, why??) as the new love story, and I find it too much.

Season 8 - Is mostly terrible, and Jim and Pam feel like almost tertiary characters. If you’re into the show and get this far - sure watch it! If you’re just here for the Jim/Pam, feel free to move on.

Season 9 - Is hit and miss, but the last third is pretty solid, and Jim and Pam have some interesting things going on. I like it, and recommend the whole thing, but I realize it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

SO. The kicky little design around the yoke with the other colors? That's done using a stranded technique, where you alternate strands of yarn, both held in your hand at the same time, for the stitches and that makes a pattern. Which you probably already knew, but for those folks playing at home with little to no knowledge of knitting...now they know.

WELL. That has to be done in the round, because trying to knit back across a flat piece is like...that's unnecessarily complicated. Who would do that to themselves? Nobody. (Plus, I don't know about you, but I can go so much faster knitting a tube rather than flat pieces, because purling takes me longer and hurts my thumb after a while.)

SO OKAY. You CAN limit yourself to pullovers, although if you want patterning like that above the armpit, there's another problem in that tubes do not have armholes. Well, way back in the day in several different places, clever people figured out that you can knit a big ol' tube as fancy-pants as you want, and then you can go back later and cut armholes in it and stitch them up so the yarn won't fray, right? Then whack yourself out a pair of sleeves and sew those in, and wham-bam, sweater.

And really, if you're going to do that for sleeves, WHY NOT DOWN THE WHOLE FRONT, RIGHT? Hello, cardigans! So you make yourself a sort of selvedge edge in the knitting pattern, where you'll be cutting it, and give yourself a bit of room on either side to secure the yarns (there are various way to do this), and then you pour yourself a big glass of wine and drink only enough to calm your nerves, double-check for the eighth time, and cut down the middle. Then, as I understand it, you finish off the bottle? We'll see. I'm willing to experiment in this area.

So yeah, once your edges are secure, you pick up and knit button bands and attach buttons and weave in ends and attach your sleevies and wash it and let it dry all nice and flat and smooth, and then you strut around town like a boss and give people weirdly knowing looks because HOW COULD THEY BE UNAWARE OF YOUR KNITTERLY PROWESS? THEY COULD NOT. It's OBVIOUS.
