Babs nearly jumped out of her skin, her hand going to her heart where it hammered painfully in her chest -- the sound of the siren, starting up out of nowhere, bouncing off the walls of the alley like a trapped, shrieking animal, had startled her so badly that she just froze on the spot with her breath frozen in her throat. All of that disappeared in a moment when she spotted Jim's face behind the windshield. "No, you scared me!" she huffed, folding her arms across her chest, a moue on her lips. "What, do I fit the description of a suspect on the lam? Petite blonde with great legs, maybe?"

He makes me happy, yes. I know people don't understand that, but frankly, I don't give a damn if they don't understand. It's not about them.

Babs curled up against Jim's chest with her head nestled against his shoulder, her entire body relaxed. She was almost drowsy with contentment, a little sigh leaving her lips as she snuggled closer to him. She always slept better with him here. Even after everything, having Jim's arms around her always made her feel safe. It was one of the many threads that drew her back to him time after time. She lifted her head and pressed a soft kiss to the curve of his jaw, breathing him in for a moment. "Are you staying the night?" she said, fairly sure she already knew what his answer was going to be. Or at least hoping she did.

“You know, you don’t have to sit here with me, sir. I’m fine.” Of course Peter was glad that Jim was here with him, but he knew how busy Jim was. He had been a little surprised to see him here when he woke up in the first place. It had reminded him of all the times he’d been sick as a kid, and Jim had sat with him, patiently watching cartoons with him while he ate Cheerios because they were the only thing Peter could stomach. Even as a little boy Peter had valued the one-on-one time he had with his father. Each time his dad had showed up for visits when Peter was a kid had felt like a miniature Christmas morning. “I’m sure you have something better to -- ow.” He had tried to sit up, only for a sharp pain to lance through his temple. “Ouch. I’m okay.”

Babs swallowed, trying to hide the fact that her hands were trembling by folding her arms across her chest. “I know,” she said, offering him a thin smile. Every instinct was begging her to put her arms around him, to take comfort from his touch like she always had. He probably wouldn’t push her away. But she was afraid of what she would say right now, when her defenses were already down. That she still loved him. She missed him. She wanted their family back. She shook her head, smiling faintly. “And such a dashing rescue, too. I’m just glad he decided to do this here, rather than follow me home,” she murmured, glancing toward the man who had been bundled into the back of the cruiser. She was more startled than anything else. Men had been angry over the curfew before, but they had never tried to attack her over it. Until tonight, at any rate. He had grabbed her as she was leaving the club, but she’d managed to get back to her office and call Jim. He had been in the middle of beating down the door -- or attempting to, anyway -- when Jim showed up. “Oh, well, and glad you made good time,” she said, with another crooked smile.

“That’s illegal.” (Jim)

“Walking around naked in my own home is hardly illegal, Jim,” Babs said, leaning against the doorway. “Not to mention I’m not actually naked--” She adjusted the hood of the robe covering her wet hair. “And even if I was, it’s not like it’s anything you haven’t seen before.” She padded into the kitchen, her bare feet making her passage almost silent. “Peter is still at preschool,” she called over her shoulder, assuming that’s why Jim was there.
