*********
Ken nervously watches you as you prepare to ring the door bell; it's his first time meeting your extended family, and he was even more nervous than he was a couple years ago when you were doing this exact thing, but with only your parents waiting behind that door. Now it was your parents, your aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, siblings, and in laws.
You smile reassuringly at him as you lift your hand up to ring the doorbell. Suddenly, you feel something holding you back and you turn to see your boyfriend holding your arm so that you don't press the button. You chuckle and shake your head at him.
"Don't worry, they're fine, they're not going to bite you. Well, my niece might, but she's teething right now," you say.
He sighs and hesitantly lets go of your arm. You ring the doorbell and your mother comes to open the door, behind her the sounds of laughter and multiple people talking at once could be heard. Oh, how you wished you were in there with them right now. If only your boyfriend felt that way; but he was nervously hiding behind you, glancing uncertainly behind your mother into the house.
"Ah, you made it," you mother says, engulfing you in a tight hug, "and you brought Jaehwan." She lets you go and goes to hug Ken, and he smiles softly and hugs her back, relaxing a bit because of her presence.
"It's nice to see you again," he says.
"I'm glad you made it. Come, in come in, we're about to have to dinner. You two can set the table - I need all the help that I can get."
Your mother ushers the two of you inside quickly, and you set your luggage to the side and follow your mother and Ken into the kitchen. She orders Ken to grab all of the good china out of the top cupboards, and you watch as he frantically runs around doing whatever it is your mom orders. Getting the glasses, the plates, the bowls, the placemats, utensils; it was kind of funny watching him run around, but it was also kind of cute.
"Young lady, don't just stand there. Help!" your mother orders, pulling you out of your thoughts. You frantically run over to Ken and take the placemats from him. Bringing them out to the dining table, you begin to place them the way you remember them always being arranged. You go back into the kitchen to get the plates and start setting and when you notice Ken standing in front of the oven. You walk over and stand next to him.
"What're you doing, Jaehwan?" You ask, looking over at him.
He notices you and smiles. "I'm watching the ham for your mom," he says.
"Why? You think it's going to run away?" You tease, smiling at how cute and diligently he was following directions. He was so willing to help your mom with anything and everything, and it made you proud that he's yours and all yours.
"Well, the ham is actually quite rebellious, you know," he replies, chuckling slightly, "to be honest, I have no idea what she meant by 'watch' the ham."
"I think she meant make sure that it doesn't overcook and burn," you say, glancing over at the oven.
"Hey you two, having a party without me?" A voice calls out. The two of you turn around to see your sister standing there, holding her daughter in her arms, smiling. You smile brightly and walk over to her, giving her a loose hug so as to not squish the child in her arms.
Ken comes over, and the child stares at him before holding out her arms to him. He looks confused for a moment, but you nudge him and he holds out his own arms, your sister transfering her child into his arms. The baby coos and starts to slap him with her fist. He smiles slightly and pretends to try to eat her fist every time it got to close to his face, making the child go into a giggling fit.
"Omnomnomnom," he noises, making her giggle some more.
"Be careful, she just-" Your sister starts but then pauses when a volcano of milk erupts onto Ken's face and shirt, "ate," she finishes, a bit too late. You stare at Ken for a moment in shock before bursting out laughing. Your niece starts giggling again as she looks at Ken, and he smiles lightly at her.
"You little monster," he coos affectionately, "you messy little monster, all my BB cream is melting because of you." She giggles even more.
Your sister takes the baby from Ken and orders him to go clean up. Ken waddles into the bathroom and you turn back to the ham in the oven. You think about what Ken said about it being rebellious and imagined the ham getting up and drawing graffiti on the kitchen counters, something along the line of 'YOU'LL NEVER CATCH ME ALIVE, COPPERS, because, you know, I'm already dead!'. You giggle to yourself and your mom comes back to take the ham out of the oven.
"We're about ready for dinner, is the table set?" She asks, carrying the ham. You suddenly remember your mission and grab the plates, running after your mom and setting the table as she begins to set the food in the center. You run into the kitchen as Ken was walking out and you bump right into him - while he was holding the cake.
"Oh, hey, didn't see you there," He says, wiping the cake off his eyes so that he could look at you. You chuckle lightly.
"This doesn't seem to be your day at all," you comment, taking the smashed cake from him.
"No, it really doesn't," he chuckles lightly, light-hearted as always, "I'm going to go clean up again, hopefully no one attacks me with food while I walk." He says, going back into the bathroom once again.
"Looks like Jaehwan got hungry," your mom comments when she sees the cake. You smile softly and then proceed to go into the kitchen to put the cake on the counter, in case someone wants cake with the imprint of Ken's face in it.
Ken comes back out just as your mom calls everyone in for dinner. You take Ken's hand and lead him into the dining room as everyone takes their seats.
Sitting down next to him, you enjoy the company of those dearest to you. Laughter and stories are shared as the food on the table gradually disappears into the bellies of about twenty hungry people. The children keep coming up to Ken and asking him if the cake tasted good, making him blush lightly in embarrassment.
After dinner was over, the family went into the living room and let the children open presents and sing Christmas songs. You smile contently and lean into Ken, who was sitting next to you. There wasn't much you could ask for anymore - you have everything already. The children began to leave with their parents, hugs and kisses and goodbyes were shared, while you and Ken go into your room to call it a night. Cuddling in the bed, he kisses you lightly on the head.
"Well that wasn't too bad. We should do this again next year," he says.
You laugh lightly. "With your family, right?" You ask.
He groans lightly. "Well, you better prepare yourself, this year was my year, next year is yours." he says, chuckling lightly while imagining everything that happened to him happening to you.
Ah, your boyfriend was the best.
