A: Yeah, with Sami and Kevin back and the superstar shake up, could have been fun for you. I don’t need an excuse to go to Montreal. Sami and Kevin at home? It’s going to be a good one. Do you think Sami will shit on his hometown crowd? Doubt it.
Me: This is why I’m marrying you in a few days. You thought to feed my sad obsession. That’s so sweet.
Hey guys, I’m sorry I’m so bad at uploading these but this is the last part! I hope you enjoyed it and thank you to everyone that’s read it <3 Part 1 part 2 part 3
It was a good two hours before they were able to leave, the sun having fully come up a chilly Spring day. He’d been given two weeks worth of antibiotics with strict instructions to take all of them. He should start to feel better in a few days though with his fever down he was already feeling an improvement. He was no longer leaning on Anna for support though he still held onto her hand. She was glad to see a little more life in him though he was still clearly miserable, sneezing harshly into his sleeve.
“Bless you.”
“Thanks,” he groaned, blowing his nose. “I’m so tired.”
“You’ve spelt for like two days straight,” Anna teased gently, nudging his side.
“Don’t care, tired,” he mumbled, resting his head atop hers.
Despite standing at a fair height Anna was still nearly half a foot shorter than Jamie, who loved to take advantage swallowing her up with his larger frame.
“Come on, the sooner we get back to the car the sooner we can get you back to bed,” Anna said, tugging him along.
“We’re going back?”
Anna turned to face him with a frown and that little creased in her forehead she always got when she was upset.
“Where did you think we were going?” she asked.
Jamie shrugged, coughing weakly into his wrist. “Thought you might drop me back at my car, I’ve got medicine now, I’ll be fine.”
“No, you need a proper bed and rest, not the back seat on your car,” she said.
“But Anna…”
“But Jamie, we’ve been through this. I’m not putting your health at risk for their sake, I refuse.”
He knows that look, the one of passion and fire, it’s one he’s sure will save lives one day. He should know better than to fight on her on this, they’ve been through it so many times already. But at the same time he hated all the risks she was taking for him. It felt wrong to jeopardize everything but nothing seemed able to convince her otherwise.
“Bed does sound pretty good…”
Anna gave a tired smile that Jamie thought was beautiful.
The drive home was nothing noteworthy, Jamie commented on Anna’s driving and she accused him of being a backseat driver. It was one one of their more lighthearted moments for days and Anna found herself laughing. She drove the mini into the garage, no one would even know it had been out. As they walked back toward the house Anna’s stomach grumbled, they’d been in such a rush they hadn’t had time for breakfast.
“Are you hungry?” Anna asked as she pushed open the front door.
Jamie was about to answer but the words died in his throat. A woman was standing in the hallway, staring at them with wide eyes.
“Shit, hi Mary.”
It wasn’t Mrs James, Jamie felt himself go weak with relief. Anna’s arm coming around his waist to keep him steady.
“Mary, I can explain…”
Anna’s voice was drowned out by that of something shouting, another woman somewhere in the house.
“Anna, Anna, where is that stupid girl?”
The blood drained from Anna’s face, fear like ice caught in her throat and made her heart pound. She felt sick, sweat on her palms, she didn’t know what to do, there was no plan. Mary was still staring at them both in disbelief as the sound of Mrs James descending the staircase echoed down the hall.
“Help us,” Anna whispered desperately, her voice full of panic and fear.
Mary put her hand into her pocket and took out an old fashioned set of keys and thrust them into Anna’s hand.
“Go,” she hissed. “Get out of here.”
Anna gripped Jamie’s hand and before he knew it he was running, his lungs burnt and his head felt dizzy. He didn’t know how he stayed upright as Anna pulled him through the house. She took them into the kitchen and then into a small pantry like room, one very like the room they’d entered the house in on their first night. It was smaller and older, like it hadn’t been updated with the rest of the house. It held a few half empty wine crates along with a fewer other boxes and a door. Anna was shaking as she tried to get the key in the door, Jamie wanted to ask what was happening but he was focused on trying not to cough. His chest felt like it was on fire. Anna got the door open and the next thing he knew he was being pushed up a flight of stairs. Up and up they went until Anna finally stopped, slumping back against the wall to catch her breath, and Jamie finally let out the coughs he’d been holding on to.
“What was that?” Jamie croaked, he was shaking so hard he was sure his fever had risen again.
“These are old servant stairs, they were used back in the day so the Lord and Lady didn’t have to see their staff moving about the house. Mary keeps the key, just in case.”
“Servant stairs? What kind of house is this?”
“An old one, now come on, you look like you’re about to pass out.”
Jamie nodded and they continued, slowly up the rest of the stairs. At the top there was another door that Anna unlocked, letting them out on the landing beneath Anna’s room. The door to Anna’s parents room was open but there was no sound from within, Mr James had probably followed his wife downstairs for breakfast. The thought of food making Anna’s stomach grumble even louder. Anna’s room was the same mess they’d left it in in their hurry to leave, Jamie headed straight for the bed desperate to lie down but Anna stopped him.
“I’m sorry, you can go sit down in the bathroom but I need to make sure no one going to come up. Okay?”
He coughed into his wrist, nodding.
“Don’t forget to lock the door.”
Jamie shuffled out of sight looking as miserable as ever. Anna felt a pain in her chest and it wasn’t from running up so many flights of stairs. She’d just wanted to take care of him, to make sure he was okay but it had turned into such a mess. She should have known it was never going to be easy.
It was a whole five minutes before there was a creak on the stairs. Anna’s breath froze as she waited, sat on the edge of her bed. Time seemed to slow down until the eventable click of the door and the figure walked in the room.
“What the hell was that about? I just had to lie to your mother, telling her you felt better and had gone out to meet some friends!”
Anna couldn’t remember the last time she’d heard Mary so angry, maybe that time she was caught trying to keep a stray cat in her room when was seven.
“I can explain.”
“You better.”
Mary stood there with her hands on her hips, eyes cold as Anna told her the whole story. Starting with how she met Jamie, to why they chose not to tell anyone and then to bringing him home and the hospital.
“He has Pneumonia?” Mary asked, her voice softened, her cold demeanor already slipping.
Anna nodded. “I wouldn’t have brought him here if we’d had a choice…. Mary I’m sorry, I never meant to drag you into all of this.”
Mary sighed. “It’s a bit late for that..”
“I’m sorry, I never wanted to lie to you, to trick you, it just got out of hand.”
Anna put her head in her hands, trying to calm herself before she really did start crying. The mess that she’d made felt like it was never ending and for a moment it seemed like it was going to become too much. Mary’s hand came to rest on her shoulder, slowly rubbing her arm until she calmed down.
“I’m not mad Bee, I can’t lie I’m a little hurt you didn’t come to me but I’m not mad. But mostly I’m worried, this is a hell of a thing to keep from your parents and what if they find out? We both know how your parents would react and I don’t want to see you lose something you’ve wanted since you were a little girl.”
There it was again, that stupid risk. It kept coming back no matter how many times Anna tried to push it away. All she wanted was to save people, to help them and to have Jamie by her side. Why was the universe trying to make that so impossible?
“I won’t give it up, any of it, not that dream and not Jamie. I can do this, I just need a little help, I realise that now.”
For every second Mary said nothing Anna’s heart beat a little faster until the point she thought it was going to give out.
“Okay, I’ll do what I can. My mother always brought me up not to lie, that the honesty was the best policy and all that but I think if she could see me now she’d understand. In fact I’m sure she’d be first to march up to your mum and dad and tell them how crazy they’re being.”
It felt like a weight had been lifted from Anna’s shoulders, one she’d been carrying so long she’d gotten used to it being there. She stood up, wrapping her arms around her friend because that’s who Mary was, someone she could rely on, someone she loved.
Anna woke one morning a few days later to find Jamie’s skin cool against hers, his fever having broken some time in the night. She smiled and ran her fingers through his hair, pushing it away from his forehead as if to check the fever was really gone. His eyes blinked open, a smile on his lips matching hers.
“Feeling better?” she asked.
“Much,” he replied.
She could still hear a slight wheeze to his breathing but she knew it would take awhile for his lungs to fully heal.
“I was having such a good dream, I was driving your mini with you in the passenger seat but we weren’t going anywhere. We were just driving like the whole world was at our feet,” Jamie said. Anna wanted nothing more than to feel the same way to have their future nothing but the open road but something was still bothering her and as Jamie stretched, his arms above his head she caught a glimpse of the scar again. She reached out to touch it, her fingers brushing over the jagged line. She’d thought about it a lot in the last few days despite trying to push it away, her gut told her there was something more than just a mark on his skin.
“What is it?” he asked.
Anna hadn’t realised he’d been watching her, the worry written on her face.
“Where’d you get it?” she asked, her fingers still on the scar.
“That, it’s nothing,” Jamie replied before rolling away from her.
“Jamie?”
“It doesn’t matter,” he said, pushing himself up.
“Then why can’t you tell me?” Anna asked, sitting up.
Something had changed in his demeanor, he seemed cold and stiff like she’d struck a nerve. Which did nothing to sooth the hammering in her chest.
“I’m trying to protect you,” he said. Anna had heard him angry, yelling at the world but not like this. His voice was low but there was no denying the bite in his words.
“From what?” she pushed.
“From me!”
The anger in his words made Anna jump and she found herself moving away from him.
“Why? What did you do?” Anna demanded, she refused to let her voice shake. She was better than that, she refused to be scared by him.
“I...I…” He choked on his words before he started coughing. It sounded like he was dragging up the last gunk from the bottom of his lungs, leaving him hunched over and gasping for breath. Anna’s first reaction was to help him but she stayed back.
“Jamie, tell me. I am not such little rich girl that needs protecting, stop thinking I can’t handle it. Don’t you dare treat me like my parents, you do not get to decide what I deserve to know or who I am, I thought of all people you’d understand that.”
His breath was still shaking, she could tell his chest was heaving though he still faced away from her. She waited with mixed emotions fear at what he would say, her whole world was hanging on the edge of a cliff and his words had the power to send it over. Her fists clenched so tightly she was nearly bleeding.
Jamie cleared his throat, wincing slightly before speaking.
“...It was after a particularly bad fight with mum, I was young, reckless and honestly no idea what I was doing. All I knew was that I had a knife, an old pocket one that my grandad had given me and that I wanted to do something. I ended up trying to mug someone, I wanted someone to take my anger out on so I tried to threaten a guy. I thought I might get some money out of him at least but it turned into a fight and at some point he gone hold of the knife. The last thing I remember is blood, the warm stickiness of it as it seeped through my fingers and woke up in hospital a few hours later.”
A thousand scenarios had gone through Anna’s mind but none of them quite matched the truth. She was felt feeling cold, like everything had been drained out of her leaving her just a shell.
“Do you see why I didn’t tell you? Because this is who I am!” Jamie yelled before dropping his head into his heads, shoulders shaking.
“No it’s not.”
The colour had returned to Anna’s cheeks and brought with it a fire, one she felt in her very soul. There’d been something she’d seen in Jamie from the first moment she saw him, he looked like he could’ve been a villain some bad movie and he played the part well but that wasn’t who he was. It was what other people had tried to make him, the problem child, the rotten apple when in fact he was as much a kid trying to find his place in the world like everyone else.
“What?” he questioned.
“It’s not who you are, it’s who you were. You’re better than that, I know you are.”
She reached out and touched his shoulder, he fell back into her touch until they were both facing each other again. His eyes were red and as she went to wipe away a tear from his cheek she realised there was blood on her palm.
“It doesn’t bother you? What I’ve done?” he asked.
“No it bothers me, a lot but I’ll get there. Because I know you’re better than that and we’re not going to become what everyone expects us to be.”
“Can I kiss you?” he asked.
“Not yet, soon okay?”
He nodded, moving a piece of hair from her face and in that moment she was sure she loved him. Because only love that hurt that much but make it worth it.
It took just over a week in total before they were in the forest again. They’d sneaked out in the early hours of the morning, straight passed Anna’s parents room without so much as a whimper. The clearing was much the same, the view of the stars still visible through the gap in the trees though the moon made it too bright to see many. They were sat on the roots under the trees, Anna’s head rested against Jamie’s shoulder as he pointed out some of the constellations.
“You see that one that looks like a sideways W? That’s Cassiopeia.”
“How’d do you know all this?” Anna asked.
Jamie shrugged. “I’ve always liked looking at the stars, your problems always feel so much smaller after looking at the universe.”
Anna smiled, her hand finding Jamie’s warm one. He always a little bit warm, it was just the way he was and though she was thankful he was no longer burning it meant he was great to be next to on chilly nights.
“What are you going to do now?” she asked.
They’d been avoiding the question all night, like they usually did. Trying to ignore the future and live in the moment because it was the best they could do.
“Go home I guess, make up some bullshit about staying with friends and see where I go from there. You?” Jamie replied.
“Back to studying I guess, it’ll be exam season soon then only five more years…”
“Don’t say it like that, we’ll find a way one of these days,” Jamie said, kissing the top of her head.
The night slipped away until it was morning and their goodbye could no longer be prolonged. Jamie head her face in his hands and it was then they kissed, under the last drops of moonlight. She knew their future was never going to be easy, never going to be certain and that was okay, as long as they found a way then it would okay.
