what small things do you really like seeing in fic? like the opposite of pet peeves?
Wow! This is a really good question. What I look for in fic is characterization and technique.
I like it when characters are complex human beings. I love coming of age stories because it shows a character’s growth process. And I like to read about people becoming better. One of the reasons why I fell for YOI was its mature handling of characterization. Of course you have your angsty teenager in Yuri Plisetsky, but you also have Yuuri, who is stronger than he looks. He overcomes his weaknesses. He knew Yuri was underestimating him. And he found a way through his anxiety to win. That’s amazing.
I have a huge boner for writers using interesting narrative techniques in fic. I mean, literary fiction is so… why not have the same kind of interesting, introspective fic but with characters we love, instead? So I notice things like dialogue, and how little gestures can be used to show how a character feels without saying it out loud or even in their thoughts. Sort of like how an actor does it in film. It’s unsaid, but you see/feel it. Sometimes what’s left unsaid is far more powerful.
I definitely love contrasts and parallels as a technique. There was a fic I read recently which had a mean teenage Viktor from the past, in contrast to his lovely canon self. That in turn was a comparison with the present Yuri Plisetsky. Who was far more skilled than Viktor was as a teenager. I found it a really fascinating take on the time travel trope.
Er, I think I wrote a mini essay up there when you asked for small things, sorry! Some other small things I love: good dialogue. Dialogue should sound like real people speaking. I’ve always had an issue with writing dialogue, so I respect writers who do great dialogue.
Friendships! Friendships are so important. Antagonistic friendships, fluffy friendships, supportive friendships…
Details that have to do with the five senses. Not just how it looks. I love reading how a place or something smells/feels/tastes. The sounds coming from it.
Cultural differences!! Ah this canon is so rife with potential. It’s brilliant.
And I guess I love a crying Viktor Nikiforov. :)
