i think about jacob geller’s “pinocchio is a story about art and god” video essay quite a bit. more specifically, i think about the quote “abandoned by the god who created you” at least twice daily.

geller, if i’m remembering this correctly, says this about a.i. artificial intelligence, which is based on pinocchio, but i’ve noticed that it’s a reoccuring theme within most, if not all, interpretations of the story.

some examples include shrek, the original carlo collodi story, disney’s pinocchio, saban’s pinocchio, guillermo del toro’s pinocchio, etc.

as a fact, geppetto is pinocchio’s god. he created this puppet with his own two hands. he is not only pinocchio’s father, he is pinocchio’s Father. similarly, the fairy with turquoise hair, aka the blue fairy, could be considered a goddess, as she gave him life in most interpretations.

now that it is established that geppetto is god to him, it’s important to mention that geppetto either abandons him, mistreats him, or is overall not too present in pinocchio’s life. as an example, in shrek 1, we see geppetto sell pinocchio away. in collodi’s original book, geppetto just stops showing up for multiple chapters when pinocchio needs him most. same with saban’s 1972 pinocchio.

so, in almost all interpretations, pinocchio is abandoned by the god who created him. geppetto is that god and he is not there. the blue fairy doesn’t actually appear in so many productions.
