An intro
So this is me, I am Sarah, wrong side of 35, a primary school teacher, wife and mother to 3 unique and unusual children. This is our world.
My eldest Ben, is described as an 'interesting child' by most who have the fortune to be allowed to be part of his world. He arrived (eventually) after a normal pregnancy, at the stroke of midnight, with me screaming, not him. He was a huge baby...all 10lbs 10oz of him and the moment I gazed into his big brown eyes I was under his spell. This is quite handy for Ben, as he is a challenging and unusual child who test's patience to the extreme. At the age of 3 he was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, but this was never really the answer for me. I used to feel that even for an Autistic kid he wasn't normal. I wondered what the hell I was doing wrong.
About 2 years ago, I heard of a condition called P.D.A., pathological demand avoidance syndrome. Me and the hubby looked at each other, we laughed, and said 'Yeah, Ben has that!'. Then we watched the behaviour of the child...and it was a mirror of our own world, down to the bedroom filled with toys, not becuase Ben is spoilt, but because he needs 'things' the way the rest of us need air.
Straight away, I jumped to the great oracle otherwise known as 'Google' and researched, and hey presto! For the first time ever I was reading about my child, the pieces of the jigsaw started fitting...I had an answer! No longer was I the bad parent, or my child the spawn of Satan, he had a condition, a reason.
Ben gets very anxious about a demand, or a percieved demand. This leads to a myriad of avoidance strategies, from excuses and bargaining to violence and anger. It makes family life...interesting? Demands are anything from 'tidy your room' to 'brush your teeth' or 'have time out'. He can't cope. Neither can we. We ask for help. We get none. Fun eh?
I'm sure his condition raises many questions (usually from people who read the Daily Mail I find!) Is it bad parenting? I'm not ideal, but my other children are well behaved and polite, I can't be doing that much wrong. Am I after DLA money so I can sit on my backside and rake in the tax payers pennies? No, I'm a hard working primary teacher. Does he just need a good slap, as it did you no harm? Nope, I won't teach a violent child that violence is the answer. Can't you just make him behave? If I had the answer to that one I would be a very rich lady indeed.
As hard as our life is with Ben, I do adore him. He is completely mad, he's loving, he writes totally insane comic strips. He kicks ass at Mario Cart. He knows more about Harry Potter than J.K. herself.
So, that's our eldest. I'm sure you'll get to know him and the rest of the tribe well. And my first blog over.
