what kills me is how ace says “it’s been five years since we started to put money in our pirate savings.” ace and sabo were 10. which means they’ve been saving up money dreaming of freedom since they were literal babies. my god. 5 years of feral bestfriendship. 5 years duo-ing luffy-less & striking fear into the hearts of men, terrorizing & haunting the gray terminal like ghosts. just the 2 of them!!! then sabo becomes a literal ghost!! and the 3 become 2. i always wondered why luffy & ace waited til they were 17 to set out to sea, like they aren’t the kind of guys to follow an arbitrary rule like that, then i rewatched the flashback and….. sabo tells ace in their little makeshift treehouse that its basically over for him & his free will once a noble like him turns 18, so he HAS to set sail by 17……. ace&luffy waited til they were 17 to set sail.. because sabo had to wait til he was 17…. they will go when they're 17, just like sabo who died before he could ever have his freedom…. & the way the ocean is visually framed against them when ace swears this, like a wall on all sides!!!  

also how, day after the news, ace's looking out at the sea & luffy’s facedown by the cliff, clutching his big hat, he can’t even lift his face, and he croaks, ace i want to get more strong, more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more… shot of the ocean again, endless, it could drown you. theyre drowning!! but ace is different, ace seems to have metabolized sabo’s final request overnight (like dadan didn’t just truss him UP IN A TREE so he wouldn’t go after the dragons in his stupid suicide mission lmao, he’s rly not slick), like!!! ace even asks makino to teach him manners like a proper older brother, the sort sabo would’ve wanted him to be for luffy, and what im saying is. so much of who ace&luffy are Fundamentally is shaped by sabo, & how they lost sabo. what im saying is when 17-year-old ace finally stepped into his little dinghy, he brought sabo with him too, and everywhere since i think
