John Prine and Alejandro Escovedo, Independent Icons

John Prine and Alejandro Escovedo will receive Independent Icon awards from the American Association of Independent Music June 18 in New York.

Both artists will perform at the event.

Prine is being recognized for “his enormously influential career as a country- and American-leaning singer-songwriter via his oft-covered hits” such as “Angel from Montgomery” and “Hello in There,” A2IM said in a statement.

Escovedo’s award honors his “40-plus-year career that has traversed the genres of Latino music, Americana, punk and rock ’n’ roll.”

This is the second big honor of 2020 for Prine, who’s also getting a Lifetime Achievement award at the Grammys this year.

“I’m really excited to be accepting this award alongside my friend, the great Alejandro Escovedo,” Prine tweeted.

Escovedo hadn’t commented as Sound Bites went to press.
