Oddities #1

For the first in my series of peculiarities between the UK and US: paper dimensions.  Why, oh, why should paper be a-very-similar-but-in-fact-different size?  A little bit shorter and a little bit fatter in the US than in the UK.  Why?  THERE IS NO REASON.
