passionlip is innocent, but she’s innocent in a (wo)manchild sort of way, her natural reaction and instinct to dealing with bad things and bad feelings is essentially throwing a tantrum; to cry and blame the whole world around her and retrieve into her own emotional bubble of self-affirmation and guilt-tripping of other people all while being at once self-deprecating because of her own issues but still having zero self awareness at the same time. but none of that is malicious. it’s the behavior of a child who’s been forced to take the role and responsibility and the power that demands an adult’s maturity, something she hasn’t ever had the chance or opportunity or develop, which is compounded by how she’s essentially the humanoid embodiment of emotions and feelings that are by nature irrational. none of that is conductive to navigating the world and human interaction, let alone the very specific circumstances in the world of ccc, in a mature, reasonable, sensible way. in ccc, her character is tragic because her nature means she can’t outlive this realization, but the fact alone that she’s capable of realizing this, of coming to develop this self awareness, understanding, maturity, and taking steps to improve, to me is what’s most important of all, and it speaks stronger of her character than anything else.

anyway, that’s why she’s good, because she’s an uncomfortably real portrait of a certain kind of human behavior but also the ability to outgrow it, and it’s doing her efforts and genuine suffering a disservice to play her off as nothing but an innocent done-no-wrong perfect victim.
