A hybrid of art, performance, and fashion, Cave’s “soundsuits” incorporate everyday materials and found objects. Influenced by African masquerades, in which the performer’s identity is concealed and taken over by the costume, Cave created his first soundsuit in 1991 in response to the Rodney King beating and ensuing Los Angeles riots. He wanted to create a suit that would disguise and protect its wearer like a suit of armor.
