When Voldemort finally visited to Godric's Hollow and the Potter’s to end their tiny son, life for Aiden Morgan was already over, at least as he once knew it. His best friend’s family, including Edgar, had been murdered mere months before, and Aiden had left his house only twice since he received the news. That Aiden, someone who had been so full of life, was now a hollow mold of his former self was an insult to existence. He didn’t find out about the deaths of Lily and James Potter until he ran out of food and, more importantly, alcohol, and even that was a full three weeks since it had happened. The Daily Prophets were piling up at his door, and he glanced down to see a bold headline "21 Days Without The Dark Lord”. The fact that the war had ended didn’t phase him — it had already taken the most important thing from him that it could have, and it would never really be over for him. But it was the accompanying picture of a man and a woman holding a child that caught his attention. 

Aiden sagged to the stone steps below him and grabbed for the paper, his errand forgotten. Lily. It took only minutes for him to deduce what had happened (a few moments longer than it would have if he was sober). His mind flashed to last time he had seen her, at her wedding to James, and how radiant she had been. Then came the memories of the redhead and the months they had spent in the Ministry’s protection program after his public outburst about Muggleborn rights. At first she was their as part of the Auror force, but then their attraction to each other combined with the hours and hours of nothing to do overtook them. By the end, he had been sorry to see her go but happy that they were both able to return to their lives. 

Had Aiden given it any thought, he wouldn’t have imagined that anything short of the Dark Lord coming after his family would have affected him now. Yet the news of Lily’s death slashed open his soul with a ferocity that almost matched his anger at the murder of the Bones. He exhaled the breath he had been holding since sitting down, and inhaled frantically, trying to ease the emptiness inside his chest. The night air was cold and dry, and filled his lungs with a sharpness that seemed to slice as he breathed it in. Numbness had overtaken his life, aided by alcohol, and this pain was the first thing he had felt in months. He pushed it repeatedly through his mind, much like he would run his tongue over a cut on his lip. Now that he could feel, he couldn’t let it go. Edgar was gone, Lily was dead, and Aiden knew that the pain wouldn’t last forever. When it was gone, when it no longer tore him open every time he thought of her red locks or bright eyes, he would fade back into his previous stupor. As he stood and stumbled off down the street to the corner store, he cursed. He wished the war had taken him too.

Aiden was dozing on the couch like he did on most afternoons. It was a nice way to pass a few hours, and Lily usually woke him with some biscuits, a pillow to the face, or… well, life had been much better since he had finally given into the redhead’s advances. But the smell that eased him out of his light sleep wasn’t an intoxicating combination of butter, flour, and sugar, but something else entirely. He sniffed without opening his eyes, trying to place it. It wasn’t until he heard Lily’s bare feet cross the floor and the following sound of the screen door swinging open and then shut until he understood. 

The summer had been unbearably hot and dry. While it had given them excuses to wear as little clothing as possible, Aiden was under the firm belief that cold weather was better than hot. One could only take off so many layers before there was just nothing left to take off. The rain was sudden and would probably only last a few minutes, but it was a sign that the summer was ending. He stood up, following the girl outside and grinning as he caught sight of her. Her head was tilted back, her face turned up to the sky, as if she was welcoming the drops of water onto her skin. She had dressed for the weather they’d been having, and now her tank top and shorts were slowly being soaked. The red locks that he adored so much were pulled into a high ponytail, darkening like they did when the shower stream touched them. 

She must have heard him, for she turned to face him, hands in the air as if she was collecting the raindrops for later. He was struck with the thought that this wasn’t going to last. The Ministry had promised that Aiden would be back with his family by Christmas, and now fall was almost here. Running the math in his head, he figured he had four months, maybe five, left with Lily. He wasn’t kidding himself with hopes that this affair would continue after they both returned to their lives. She was intoxicating, but it was something born of convenience, and nothing more. He was determined to take advantage of every moment, and he stepped into the rain towards her. For the rest of his life, the smell of rainfall on dry ground would remind him of Lily and how her skin felt when it was soaked with rain.

They had been teasing each other for an entire week and Aiden was reaching the limit of his self-control. After the first morning (when Lily burst her way into his shower) all modesty between the two of them had disappeared. During the day, he had taken to wearing close-fitting shirts, charmed tighter just to frustrate her. Lily seemed to have an endless supply of infuriatingly tiny skirts that he didn’t even think Aurors were allowed to own, let alone wear. At night, they both stripped down to the lowest amount of clothing they could wear without being nude, blaming it on the heat. In reality, the sultriness in the bed they shared only intensified as their clothes disappeared. Every morning, her hands found their way to his stomach while she was “sleeping”, and every morning, he pretended like it didn’t happen. He didn’t blame her –– his muscles were toned by months of professional Quidditch. And then, then there was the shower. After Lily took her hands away from him, he would get out of bed and get in the shower. She always followed, sliding in after him, and he would have to work very hard not to touch her as she soaped up her body. It was in this domain that Lily had complete, unchallenged victory.

Despite his desire to feel up her curves in return, Aiden continued to resist. It wasn’t that Lily was unwilling –– all of her actions implied that she would drop her panties the moment he asked her to, but something was holding him back. She was staying here as a part of her job, and he felt reluctant to return her advances. The last thing he wanted was to take advantage of his situation; she likely had her own romantic entanglements outside of this cabin, and he had his. Still, he couldn’t help but stare whenever she stood on her tiptoes trying to reach something off of a high shelf. Her skirt would rise, showing a taunting glimpse of one ass cheek, and he would swallow down the lustful words inviting her to undress right there. Because of her frequently repeated stunt of joining him in the shower, he knew what lay under her clothes, and he couldn’t help but wish she would tear them off and walk around naked. It was more maddening this way, he thought, that he couldn’t see her body.
