Kind of crazy when you realize how gruesome Atlantis: The Lost Empire is when you consider that 171 members of the expedition die during the initial Leviathan attack. By the end of the film nearly the entire crew of the Ulysses is gone, including its leadership.
fun fact!!!
Ok so i just finished rewatching Atlantis: the Lost Empire for the first time in a while, and
1) I love that movie so much? its one of those movies that really holds up really well to re-watching as an adult which I’m always nervous about when rewatching my favorite things from when i was a kid
2) apparently Joss Whedon worked on the story, which I just learned now, as the credits started rolling.
3) As I was watching I was googling historical references and I now have a headcanon based on minor historical inaccuracies, that the films takes place in an AU where (apart from the obvious divergence of Atlantis Existing) WWI happened slightly early. Shaky evidence includes the following facts compared with hastily sourced Wikipedia-level research:
The film takes place in 1914 and doesn’t specify what time of year. For reference, WWI started July of 1914, the USA got involved in 1917, and the war ended in 1918.
Uncle Sam I Want You poster shown, which is actually from 1917 (but was based off a British poster from 1914)
Whitmore mentions “Turkish prison”. Ottoman Empire didn’t fall until after WWI, however, “Turkish” as a word has a longer history so it could be historically sound as a reference.
Mole’s dirt piles with national flags - a lot of the flags in there look decades later than they ought to
Use of a hydrophone, invented in 1914 but improved on during/for WWI.
Generally the use of submarines, not widely in use until WWI
Mrs. Packard mentions a “suitcase” on the phone. Those apparently wern’t invented til the 30′s?
The trucks they use are closed cab with electric lighting (and the tires look like they’re air-filled, not solid rubber?), which were all improvements wikipedia tells me were made during WWI.
All of this is to say that I’m an easily distracted nerd, but also that A:tLE seems to take place mid-WWI and not early-WWI as the year of 1914 would imply
Can I have some Rayla (The Dragon Prince) and Kida (Atlantis: The Lost Empire) fanart?
Just rewatched Atlantis: The Lost Empire and let me tell ya, that’s not one of those flicks that gets over hyped by nostalgia
