Do I Know You? || Self-Para
Hannah was never good at staying in one spot when it came to parties, and the Labor Day party was no different. She’d run across a few unfamiliar faces, caught up with Addie and had a few (too many) drinks with Jess. The evening was beginning to wind down when a familiar face came into view. His name was Eric-- a really sweet guy she’d met in the park a few weeks prior. They’d only seen each other a few times, mostly casual until the last encounter, a few days ago. He had been unrelenting with his charm, and really seemed to connect with her. Before she’d known it, they were practically tearing each others’ clothes off on the way to the bedroom. \
The sex had been good, but the cuddling afterward was downright amazing. She still remembered the way he stroked his hand through her hair, how his fingertips grazed along her neck, the feeling of his lips as he showered her forehead and nose with feathery kisses. He called her amazing. Gorgeous. Perfect. She’d definitely fallen head over heels for him in that moment. Granted, they hadn’t had much contact since other than some back-and-forth texts and a couple of phone calls, but at least he was keeping in touch. They were just both so busy!
Feeling a small boost of confidence from the alcohol, she started toward him, a grin spreading over her lips. She should have called him after work, saw what he was up to-- maybe it was just fate that they were both at the party. She quickly approached him as he wandered over to the drinks station, briefly considering surprising him with a kiss to the cheek-- but it seemed odd to do so. They hadn’t really talked about where they were at in terms of a relationship, and she didn’t want to push things too hard.
“Hey! Sorry, I should have called you today! How weird is it that we’re both here?” She greeted him cheerfully. The man turned and glanced her over, looking surprised for a moment, before his brows knitted together.
“Do I know you?”
The words were like a punch to the gut, her smile wavering momentarily as she studied his expression. He was kidding, right? He had to be joking. Her lips parted to speak, but before she could get a word out, another girl bounced past her, approaching the man and placing a kiss to his lips with a giggle before turning to face her.
“Hey baby! Who’s this?” The girl questioned. Hannah could detect a hint of edginess to the woman’s voice, and though she wore a smile, she could see a dangerous glint in her eyes.
“I don’t know, sweetheart,” Eric replied as he put an arm around the woman’s waist, staring Hannah down. “I think she mistook me for someone else.”
Hannah felt her mouth frozen in a tight smile, even as her insides began to churn. “O-oh, yeah. I’m so sorry, I just-- you looked like-- you looked like a friend of mine.” She glanced between the two of them, taking a step back. “Sorry to bother you.”
“No problem. Hope you find your friend,” Eric replied coolly, before steering the woman away-- but not before giving Hannah one last pointed, icy glare.
Hannah swallowed heavily, still unable to get the feigned smile off her face as she turned and headed away. She needed to go home. Every step she took felt heavy, her chest burning as she quickly distanced herself from the party grounds. She was nearly halfway home when the tears started, her smile finally fading away. She rubbed at her eyes, determined not to let tears fall. He didn’t deserve her tears, she tried to convince herself. But holding back the tears only made her stomach hurt, and a few blocks from her house she veered off to someone’s yard to throw up in the bushes.
She gasped for air and sobbed once her stomach had emptied its contents, her head spinning and throbbing violently. Why? Why couldn’t he have just asked her to go away? Or said he wasn’t interested? Why did he have to pretend he didn’t even know her? She felt so... Cheap. So used. She stumbled along the sidewalk, letting her tears fall freely now as she zeroed in on her house.
By the time she reached her front door, she was a sobbing mess. She stood out on her front stoop, shaking like a leaf as she wrapped her arms tightly around herself. She didn’t want to go inside-- not with Ellie and the babysitter. She didn’t want to upset either of them. So she let herself cry it out, leaning against the door-frame as she worked it out of her system. It was dark by the time she’d managed to finally compose herself, wiping at her face and entering the house. The babysitter had looked at her questioningly when she entered the den, but thankfully didn’t ask any questions-- especially since Hannah paid her double what she’d promised. Ellie was thankfully asleep in the crib set up in the den near the couch, and once the babysitter left, Hannah collapsed on the couch, sniffling quietly to herself as she watched the baby sleep.
It’ll be okay, she told herself. He just wasn’t the one. There’s someone out there way better than that jerk. This is just one step along the way. It’s going to be a story some day, a lesson I can teach to someone else. It’s not so bad. we’ll cry now, and laugh later. It was difficult to tell herself those words. She wished there was someone there with her to tell her instead, someone to hug her and agree with her what a jerk Eric was. She’d have to call her aunt in the morning, vent to her about it. She just had to weather it out for now. It was that thought that made her close her eyes and drift off to sleep. When she woke up, things would be better. They had to be.
