Aashni sees red. At the same time, there's a part of him that wants to answer the Miasma's call. To touch that flesh he once revered and revel in that fake warmth, in the way it looks at him just like he did.
He needs to focus. Varsha wouldn't have wanted this. Wouldn't have wanted him to die like this. In the woods, to a phantom of him, overcome by grief.

“Well aren't you gorgeous” he had told Aashni on their first meeting. Aashni had flushed.

After their first date - a dinner in a family owned restaurant, nothing too fancy but the both of them liked it that way - Varsha had brought him to a nameless park, empty at that hour of the night and the perfect place for Varsha to kiss Aashni senseless under the stars.

“I love you”s muttered every time Aashni kissed his hand, the inside of his wrist, and all over his face, leaving no place without affection.

He was a water nymph. And Aashni couldn't help but notice how ironic it was that the Miasma swimming towards him in tendrils was nothing like the gorgeously pristine water Varsha could summon. It was black. Darkness. Death.
The illusion beckons him closer.

“Of course I will marry you, you dummy!” Varsha all but jumped into Aashni’s arms, peppering his face in kisses while a few tears escaped in the heat of the moment. Aashni remembers crying with him, almost in disbelief.

Aashni is still. His claws come out and lightning roars through his veins for how dare the Miasma take on Varsha’s likeness to attempt to kill him?

“Hey… it's going to be alright. You can do this without me. I believe in you, Aashni… I love you” there were tears again. Only his though, for Varsha was just smiling up at him while bleeding out in his fiance’s arms. The light slowly left his eyes, and Aashni couldn't bring himself to make it any faster, greedy for Varsha's final moments to last as long as possible, because he had not told him how much he loved him. Not enough times, never enough.

INTRODUCING... The Guardian Beasts of the Land
ok so lore time:
in the universe where the story takes place, the land is divided in 4 main pieces of land: The Land of the Caribou (North), The Land of the Lion (East), The Land of the Tiger (West) and The Land of the Leviathan (South).
The title of "Guardian Beast" is given whenever the previous one either dies or resigns. Both cases can take up to centuries depending on the longevity of the Guardian Beast or their perseverance.
Each Guardian Beast is chosen in a different way depending on the land.
Their role is to protect and stabilise their lands to avoid elemental imbalances and repel any threat that arises from the Miasma that resides at the edge of each land.
Aurora lost her right arm and left eye to one of those threats a century ago.
