Bahama Breeze - Spanish Cay
When we talk about places to visit in Abaco - you don't usually hear much about Spanish Cay - in fact I'd never been. We've taken this listing and needed to take some photos - and so we drove North for about 35 mins - and the owner picked us up from the mainland harbour and after a short boat ride we were there.
Spanish Cay is unique because along with the 81 slip marina, fuel dock and paved 5,000 ft runway - they have a Customs office on island. The resort also offers restaurant, bar, game room, pool, convenience store and tennis courts. The bar walls are filled with photos and memorabilia, the owner pointed out a photo of him posing with a mahi mahi.
I'd already decided I'd be back to enjoy it all (there are hotel rooms available) and we hadn't even seen the home yet. The owner took us by golf cart for a tour of the island. They have their own generator and R/O water system and of course we had to see the runway.
Bahama Breeze is beachfront, and true to the name - as we entered the home - the slight smell of the sea blown in by an island breeze greeted us. The interiors are definitely a "coastal chic". Islandy but not too casual - exactly my taste actually. The owners have beach found touches throughout. A lamp with a shade decorated with sea glass. Sea fans and shells line the windowsills. All treasures discovered on the very beach in front of us.
The home has an excellent feature in that the porch has an extension on it that’s like a catwalk out to the edge of the beach – perfect for catching rays or enjoying the moonrise. On the way out to appreciate the view, we met one of the pets, a curlytail with his very own food and water bowl! He is said to share well with the birds.
The main house has the master bed and bath, kitchen, dining room and living room. There is a nook by the window overlooking the beach for enjoying a good book.
The guest cottage has its own kitchenette and two bedrooms and one bathroom. Constructed for the owners sons – it has a separate entrance but covered walk attaching it to the home. A second apartment is downstairs with a kitchenette, bed and bath.
While the home was a pleasure to tour, the best part of the day was relaxing on the covered verandah hearing stories of the times spent there. The boys out fishing, within sight, and mom just stepping onto the beach to pass them their sandwiches. The owners favourite memories and days spend watching the summer squalls pass by. The passion in the owners voice describing the hardy construction he designed.
Just another day in the Abacos.........
