He gave the girl(?) in front of him a few awkward    blinks before waving his hands around a bit as    he tried to piece the whole thing together. 

“S-So, are you, uh- Sorry, I-I’m not really getting this,    a-are you an alien, o-or are you some sort of... sent...    sentient rock? B-Because aliens I get, y’know? Me    and my grampa go r-runnin’ around talking to aliens    all of the time, but how do- How would- I mean, y-you    don’t look like a rock.”

    “Holy shit, this view.”

   Jade slowed to a stop as she glanced around her, surveying the hilly landscape that unfolded before her.  A smile drew across her face as she lit right up, grinning from ear to ear.  The islands were pretty, her island was pretty when Prospit was still around, but this was a sight she rarely ever got to see.  Coastal areas just didn’t give way to such forested, hilly wonders.  Neither did islands, honestly.  So she hardly got to see places like this.

    Where Jade stopped was on the crest of a hill, overlooking others and the road nearby.  The treeline was opposite of the road, a sight that drew Jade’s attention.  It took her in as she watched the blue sky and shifting clouds while she just stood there, watching the forest before her as she became lost in her own head.

    She had hiked her way there while trying to gather her thoughts.  She didn’t have any jobs she had to complete (slow week, unfortunately), but at least people were coming into the shop and buying stuff.  Dave could handle himself with that.  She needed a day off to reconnect with the world again.  And what better than to hike somewhere utterly beautiful?

    As she looked around, her eyes were drawn to the large barn on the very top of the hill she stood on.  She had vaguely registered it when she initially arrived, but didn’t fully realize where she was.  ...Honestly, who put a barn and pasture on top of a hill of all things?  Who would do that?  That was really poor placement.  

    Poor, and suspicious placement.  

    It’d be a baldfaced lie to say that she wasn’t the least bit curious as she continued to walk up the hill.  Each step drew her closer to the strangely kept barn, despite the area being seemingly deserted.  As she drew nearer to it, her mind went wild with all of the possibilities of what could be in there.  Maybe it was empty, a way to keep suspicion away from what was truly hidden beneath the floorboards?  Then she’d have to cast her powers around to figure out what was below, but that always gave her a headache.  Maybe it was a ritual site for some local cult?  ...No, this wasn’t Wasteland.  It definitely wasn’t a cult.  Could just be someone’s research lab, and if that were the case, she’d love to meet the owner and exchange notes.  God, she hoped it was empty.

    When she approached the doors, she slowed her walk to a creep, trying to remain as quiet as possible in case there was something there.  She slid up to the side of the wall and listened for a few seconds, before peeking around the corner.

    Oh, shit.

    This looked occupied.  Like someone was living in it.  Fuck.  That meant she was trespassing, and the owner could show up at any minute and easily get her arrested or something.  Great.  Or even better!  They were some redneck who would shoot her on sight for trespassing!  Either way, she had to get out of there before she was spotted.

    Wait.  Shit.  What was that noise?

    And like the actual genius she was, she froze up, wishing dearly to be able to disappear on sight.  Congratulations, Jade.  You are truly showing just how intelligent you actually are.  Great survival skills there.

       The moment she’d seen the mirror, Rose had known that something        wasn’t right. She had taken it from Pearl to inspect it from herself, and,        after some deliberation, she’d decided to try and remove the gem from        the back of the object. She had to test if her theory were true. This device        certainly wasn’t made by the rebels after all. 

       Carefully, Rose gripped the broken gem, grimacing slightly, and with a hefty        pull, tugged it from its slot, dropping the mirror in favour of cradling the gem        in her palms, watching in fascination to see what.. if anything, would happen.        Maybe her theory was wrong...
