thoughts on,,,, Ulysses,,,,,,, and Raul,,,,,,,,,,,,, and also Dead Money how'd you like that dlc

oh i adore ulysses...

as a character ulysses is such a core component of apocalypse stories. despite so much senseless violence and heartbreaking losses, ulysses is the one who carries on, who holds on to the hope of creating a new home from the ashes.

he's also the one who remembers the past and keeps record of it, which is such a beautifully human thing. i think of the oral tradition of the tjapwurung people, the winter counts of the lakota tribes, the library of alexandria - our stories, our history, and our collected knowledge are such integral parts of our societies and cultures, and that's why ulysses' line, "who are you that do not know your history?" is so powerful.

and of course, ulysses was a victim of attempted genocide by the legion. his resilience isn't just a personal trait, it's representative of the endurance of his culture in the face of death and assimilation through him and his actions, his memories.

i'm trying not to get on too much of a tangent but i think of like, holidays like día de los muertos and symbols like brigid's cross and the myriad other traditions across countless cultures that survived in some form or another against the violence of colonization, and i see that in ulysses - he is the refusal to submit, to be lost or forgotten.

i love raul too, and there's a lot to be said about how his story and arc compares to ulysses' but this is so long already lol

while ulysses' story is about retaining his identity and by extension the identity and history of his people in the face of those who try to erase it, raul's conflict is about choosing who he wants to be and whether he even wants to hold onto his past when it's so full of pain. does he take up his gun and the mantle of the vigilante again, or settle into the quiet, more peaceful life of a mechanic?

i always encourage him to once again become the ghost vaquero because i'm an angry, active person, and i can't imagine sitting by and letting injustice happen without trying to do something about it.

which brings me to my one beef with raul, which is his inclination towards passivity and his indifference toward the legion. from a meta perspective, i don't love that the one companion who's chill with the fascists is a brown mexican immigrant who was literally enslaved for years.

dead money is actually my favorite dlc even though i hated every second of it the first time i played it lol. it's stressful but a really engaging and satisfying quest. also i adore christine

Hancock’s been in his brother’s shadow for years. Which in turn marked him (by parents) as a problem child. After time, the self fulfilling prophecy started to weigh him down, so he turned to chems and self medicated cause uuuuh fuck all this. He saw the bullshit his brother pulled at kicking ghouls out of Diamond City. He’s been beaten down and shoved aside by practically everyone who think they ‘know’ him as some washed up chem-addict who’s an absolute fuck up and will never amount to anything. So, he made a new name for himself. After being struck by an idea, he turned himself into a ghoul and shouldered the name attached to an old red frock. With the weight of a new name and image, he stormed the castle and made himself mayor king.
