Pulled this Dragon Prince fanart off the eternal WIP pile four years after I started it [itsbeenfouryearsohgodhowww] - a little what-if of Viren and Harrow fighting together before all the events that tore them apart! Also incorporating some now-old fanon about Viren having a bum leg, so I... Skyrim'd him.
I'm severely behind on DP now, but the Viren and Harrow dynamic and all the pitfalls therein is probably what still holds the most interest for me - just can't resist Hubristically Doomed Middle-Aged Men, I guess xD
Of course being set before Certain Events means Amaya AND Sarai can hold the braincell and dive in to save these idiots from whatever situation they've gotten themselves into!
This was supposed to be a LanceWeek23 piece, the finale even - as you can see from the date of completion... fiiiive months later, it didn't quite make it!
[Why I ever thought I was going to finish a piece with four major light sources, in three colours, and about a billion rocks, on time, is another matter entirely. No comment.]
Sometimes your protégé/ward/son falls in a big bloody hole at the arse-end of Mount Silver and you've got to go and fish him out and it turns into a whole thing. Then the things living in the hole become a whole other thing and really, the inconvenient fact that Dragonite don't fit into small spaces is only the beginning of your problems!
I'm back on my [Galar] bullshit again! I had a big brainwave when I remembered the tradition of football players swapping shirts after a match, and it was a great excuse to get Lance into that Motostoke fire-themed uniform.
My original idea was to do a swap with Drake of the Hoenn E4, but you can probably already figure out where that energy was re-directed to!
It's Lance Week 2023 baby! Let's kick things off with a double battle!
You're hiking around northern Johto and are challenged by an... aging biker and his strange young protégé? Why is boss music playing???
Also in HD without GBA crunch pretensions!
Why is the aesthetic a strange mix of Gen 3 and 4? Because I like what I like, dunworryboutit! You should worry about the amount of Dragonite that are probably going to be in this fight!
Sometimes I think he should get Outrage berserker powers, as a treat! Just lay eyes on Giovanni and spontaneously combust into red-blue flames - saves all the hassle of even getting Dragonite out to use Hyper Beam 😌
[Lance Week 2023, Day 3 - Superpower, Emergency Pinch Sketch]
Two proud, fierce, spiky-haired warriors face each other across a rocky chasm… but why do they both feel so strangely familiar to the other?! A battle for honour is surely about to begin!
Through Dragonball, Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest, Akira Toriyama had a massive influence on my childhood. I think it’s also pretty fair to say that Pokemon, and especially Lance, would not be the same without his stylistic influence on Ken Sugimori’s early work. So, for all the thrills and inspiration, both to myself and many others, thank you so much Toriyama-san, and rest in peace.
I had so much fun designing a Toriyama-style DBZ design for Lance, putting in a bit of flavour from both his Gen 1 red biker and Gen 2 pointed armour looks. The dramatic cape flourish also pulls a bit from his HGSS art pose, just for fun (and flair)
I learnt a lot picking apart and studying different Dragonball panels and colour spreads to make this crossover tribute, but perhaps the most striking thing was re-reading chunks of DBZ and realising just how good at weekly pulp adventure story pacing Toriyama was.
I already knew he had perhaps the best grasp of dynamic, crystal clear action panelling in the business, but his ability to pace out a weekly story and always have some new twist or wrinkle while maintaining a solid, driving central narrative really stood out to me this time. And that’s not even mentioning all the ad-libbing!
One of the greatest to ever do it in so very many different ways - I am sure his work will continue to inspire not just artists in our current generation, but many young artists in the future as well.
Lance Week '22 Super-Delayed Cross-Post no.4 - 'New Job'!
So anyone who follows me will know this has been my beloved headcannon for over a year now - Air-Sea/Mountain Rescue Lance!
It makes so much sense - his costume designs and colours from Gen 3 on, Dragonite's pokedex entries about benevolently saving drowning sailors in the wild, never mind with a trainer, his proclivity for heroics and proximity to the super-dangerous Mount Silver... I could go on xD
Anyhoot, please enjoy some slices across time, featuring a man in a variety of eye-searing, plastic-y trousers!
