Character development questions~
What is your character’s name? Davey Jacobs
Who gave them that name? His parents had agreed even before they were married that their first son would be David and their first daughter would be Sarah.
What’s their whole name? David Aaron Jacobs. (Sarah's middle name is Miriam and Les's is Moses. They're that kind of family. His mother's maiden name is Baum, and they discussed combining their last names, but they decided to go traditional just because Jacobs sounds nice.)
Do they have any nicknames? Les was the first to call him Davey, which is why his parents and Sarah still call him David. Jack and most of the newsies call him Dave a lot.
Does anyone tease them by giving them particularly nasty ones? Not by giving them nasty nicknames. Usually when people tease him it's really passive.
Did one of the parents disagree on their name? Nope. Esther was the one who thought of the names, but they happened to be names that Meyer always really liked. That's pretty much what made him decide once and for all to propose.
What does their name mean? Beloved.
Is their name meaning of significance to the story? I mean, it's really fitting. I kind of melted when I looked it up and saw that was what it meant.
How old is your character? 16
What grade are they in? Sophomore
What is their age? 16?? I believe I said that
When were they born? November.
Do they look young for their age? Not really. People don't mistake him for much younger. He's like a little kid in demeanor sometimes but he's also super mature for his age so it evens out.
Do they know more/less than they should at this age? Kind of less due to how sheltered he's been, but it's not in such a way that his parents kept anything important from him. He knows a lot about life and how to deal with it, but he still has a lot to learn about how to function in society.
What does your character look like?
How tall are they? However tall Ben Fankhauser is man I have no idea he's kind of tall maybe somewhere around 5'11" but who knows
What race are they? Caucasian, of Jewish descent.
Do they have scars? One on his elbow from a pretty nasty scrape when he was little that's really faint now, and one on his left hand from a mean cat he tried to pet.
Birthmarks? A really little one on his neck.
What is their hair like? Dark brown, almost black. It's short, kind of fluffy, and he has bangs.
What color are their eyes? He doesn't know. (They're actually hazel, but he hasn't been able to figure that out.)
Are they skinny/medium-sized/fat? Pretty medium-sized. He's on the thinner side, but he's pretty built. Not quite muscular, but solid.
How does your character dress?
On a school day? He dresses pretty nice in a way that you could tell his mom picked it out for him but he had no objections. Modern AU Davey wears long sleeved polos (tucked in, of course), dress pants, and athletic sneakers. Like, he doesn't even do sports. He just thinks they're good for his feet. He has no idea how ridiculous it looks with his clothing.
When going to work? Much nicer. He goes with a dress shirt and dress shoes instead of the polo and sneakers. He's still not too good at color coordination, but he's much better at knowing just how formal or casual to go in this situation.
On the weekends? Green v-necks and jeans. Sometimes sweatpants. He likes his zipped hoodies in colder weather. Khaki shorts if it's that kind of day.
On a lazy Saturday morning? One of those matching pajama thingies. But not the fancy ones with the buttons. Like, batman pajamas that he bought in the kids section in the largest size he could find.
On the way to a party? Depends on the party. If it's a super casual just people hanging out with snacks, he dresses the same way as he does on the weekends. If it's any sort of gift-giving occasion, he goes with a polo, khakis, and dress shoes. Shirt untucked if he's feeling really adventurous.
A wedding? Suit. Always a suit.
Why do they dress this way? Because he's a dork who can't dress himself to save his hecking life. But sometimes he accidentally looks like a fashion god. Like, completely accidentally.
What are their favorite colors to wear? Blue, green, and white.
What are some notable relationships your character has?
Do they have a favorite teacher? He's always been a bit of a teacher's pet, but he's really loved all his english teachers. He had one history teacher who he was particularly fond of, too.
Are their parents alive? Yup.
What do they think of their parents? Loves them to death. Sometimes his mom embarrasses him in front of his friends, though. Not that she doesn't do it completely intentionally. They all kind of love her for that.
What do their parents think of them? Pretty much the same; they love him and will be proud of him no matter what he does. They worry a lot about him, though, more than they worry about his siblings. He spends so much time caring about his friends and family that he doesn't really give his own life a second thought, and they're afraid that if he doesn't learn to find a happy medium, he'll end up unemployed and sleeping on the streets one day and having no idea how he got there or how to fix it.
Brothers/sisters? His sister Sarah is eighteen. His brother Les is ten. Davey's super protective of Les, and he and Sarah are really close. She really looks out for him in such a way that he's not aware of it half the time, and that's just how she likes it.
Pastors/coaches? There's a rabbi in his area who he talks to a lot.
What is in your character’s memory?
What do they remember most vividly? He remembers going into his parents' room after Les was born and seeing his mother there in bed holding him. Davey was six, and he'd never seen a newborn before. It was kind of weird for him, but he remembers Sarah being super excited.
Do they have selective amnesia? Not to a serious degree. He did hear some of his mother's screaming while she was in labor that he more or less blocked out.
Can they remember things from a young age? He's tried to forget a lot of the things that happened to him when he was still in school, but he still finds himself thinking about all the other kids who would laugh at him when they weren't ignoring him completely. There was a lot of snickering and whispering every time he raised his hand. At one point when he was eleven it got so bad that one morning he spilled everything to his parents and begged them not to make him go again. They almost didn't, and they did let him stay home that day, but after a lot of discussion at home they had a serious talk with his teacher. Davey was sure that would have made it worse, but once he went back the next day, no one laughed at him again. They still weren't talking to him, but they seemed to scared to do anything more than give him a weird look here and there. After that year, his parents sent him to a different school. It was a lot better there, but it wasn't until about a year before the strike that he started raising his hand again.
How old were they in their first memory? He can remember existing before Les was born, but now that he's such a huge part of Davey's life, it's really hard for him to visualize any of his life before he was six.
Do they have pleasant memories of their parents/friends? He has great memories with his family. He didn't really have friends until the strike.
Did they leave anyone behind? Why? Not deliberately. There was one girl who was nice to him in school, and they didn't really talk much, but he was upset to leave her by leaving school. He saw her a few times on the streets while he was selling, but they both felt too awkward to ever acknowledge each other.
Where does your character live?
Urban/rural? Manhattan yo.
What does the community think of the character/ their family? Everyone thinks he's kind of awkward, but really nice and polite anyhow, so they like him. And it's pretty much impossible for anyone to dislike his family. Sometimes they get a little annoyed with Les, though.
Where did the character live before this? Davey had never left Manhattan before the strike. His family couldn't really afford to travel.
Why did they move? He didn't?
Do they wish they could live somewhere else? Not really. What's Santa Fe got that New York ain't?
What is your character’s room like?
Are there clothes all over the floor, or is everything stacked up neatly and put away? It's a mess. No one knows how he finds anything on his desk, and he only makes his bed because his parents forbid him to leave the house otherwise. When he's a guest, though, people have to order him to stop cleaning.
Do they have a lot of posters or furniture? He has a bed, a desk, a chair, a bedside table, and a dresser. He has some photos with family and friends, but no posters.
Do they have a lot of clothes? Not really. He doesn't really buy clothes for himself. His mom just throws some at him when she thinks he needs more than five outfits.
What is your character good at?
Are they smart? Academically and emotionally, yes. He's not very street smart at all, nor is he socially smart.
Do they excel in school or at sports? In school, yes, even though he's a huge procrastinator. Only a select few people know that part, though, because he tries so hard to maintain his teacher's pet status. And he's dreadful at sports.
Why do people admire/dislike them? People admire him because he's such a sweetheart who's really helpful and seems to deal with life really well. Some, though, don't take kindly to his awkwardness and think his sunny disposition is completely unbearable. Hence the bullying that happened in the past.
What does your character want?
What is their ultimate goal? To make as many people happy as he can. He also really wants people to like him, but that's not the only reason he's nice to them.
What will they sacrifice everything in order to achieve? Making sure the people he cares about don't get hurt.
What does your character do when they’re not at home?
Does your character like to go out with their friends, or do they hardly ever go out? Not a lot. Jack drags him places sometimes against his will, but he usually ends up having a good time. He prefers to have people at his house.
Do they go to church? Did I mention he was Jewish yet
If they don’t go out, why not? He's pretty bad with the social skills. He's managed to make friends by going through things with them, like the strike, and he befriended Braces by being there for her while Crutchie was in the Refuge. But he's awful at making friends in casual settings.
What does your character like to do?
Even if your character isn’t good at it, do they have something they like to do? There's not really anything he's not good at that he likes doing. He's basically a master chef, though.
How does your character love?
Are they extremely clingy, or do they like open relationships? Internally, he's very clingy, but he's always worried that clingy behavior will annoy people. If you give him permission, though, he will cling to you for the rest of your life.
What is their sexual orientation? He's pretty much asexual, but romantically, he likes girls.
How do they classify their ideal partner? Someone who's as affectionate as he is, brings him out of his shell, and will help him remember when it's okay to relax. He'd also love her to be an avid reader who loves exploring, but he tries not to be picky about things like that.
Do they think appearances are as important as personalities? He cares way more about personalities, but if she's pretty, he notices. Cute smiles and laughs are his weakness.
To what extent will your character protect the one they love? To the ends of the earth. You would have to sternly order him to stop helping you before his mind would go anywhere near there.
What will ultimately destroy your character?
What is the worst possible thing that can happen to your character? Why? Failing someone he loves and being rejected because of it. He cares so much and he seeks validation a lot more than he's really admitted to himself. The thought of ruining someone's life is awful enough for him, but if they hated him as much as he hated himself for it, he wouldn't be able to cope. It would force him to come to terms with how much he needs people to love him. He'd think that he deserved nothing but hate and it would break him.
How can this be prevented? He'd have to either do perfectly at everything or learn that it's okay for him to make mistakes.
What will they do if it happens anyway? He'd need a lot of long talks with his family before he could ever go back to his old self again.
How will this impact their personality? He'd put more walls up than ever. He'd be too ashamed to tell anyone what happened or that he was hurting at all, and he'd be too scared to ever try to reach out to anyone again.
Will they change at all? In addition to the above, his need to love and help people would still be there, and not doing that would destroy him. He wouldn't feel any purpose anymore.
