The Super Special Secret Krow Lore Post

Aight. So according to the last poll y'all wanted to get the secrets of Krow in nitty gritty detail. There may be still those who don't wanna know (yet) so I'll put it under a read more. Also because it'll likely get long lmao.

His name

So I mentioned that his legal name is Isaiah. His full legal name is Isaiah Kolan Johnson. Isaiah is a biblical name meaning "god is salvation" and his middle name Kolan as well as sounding pretty fucking unfortunate also means "dove keeper". Johnson I just tried to think of the whitest sounding surname I could lmao. Krow was adopted/fostered by a conservative fundamentalist Christian family that valued reputation more than the well being of their kids. The parents have three bio kids and, not counting Krow, eight adopted and/or foster kids. Essentially they adopted/fostered kids to show to their community and church that they're "such good Christians taking in impoverished and/or PoC kids cause they're SUCH good people" but really the only kids that got ANY positive attention or care were the bio sons (the bio daughter was just expected to look after ALL her siblings). All the other kids were pretty neglected both physically, mentally and emotionally. The parents are John and Esther The names of his fellow foster/adopted siblings are: Jacob, David, Matthew, Noah, Peter, Sarah, Abigail and Leah The bio kids names are Adam, Joseph and... Mary. (: Krow ran away from home before he was set to graduate high school.

Krow's Secret, and his birth family

Before I can really get into what "Krow's secret" is, I need to mention is bio/birth family. As I've mentioned, Krow is Indian and Bengali. His parents are immigrants to America, and Krow was born in America. So his nationality is American, but race/ethnicity is Indian/Bengali. Krow's birth name is Sarveshvara Banerjee. Sarveshvara is a name derived from the god Shiva, and specifically means "determination, energy and confidence". His last name, Banerjee, are from a family of which their caste are descended from priests (so Krow actually comes from a pretty darn important caste back in India and Bengal). His father is named Riyan and his mother is named Khushi. They were essentially a victim to racism and classism in America. Krow was taken from them at a very young age and placed into foster care and that is how he was scooped up by the Johnson's.

Now, what is this big secret? As some of you may have guessed, Krow... isn't entirely human. He is descended from Naga (specifically on his father's side), and specifically... his Naga clan were cursed by the goddess Manasa. A long, long time ago, Krow's Naga ancestors were giving terror to the mortal human populace. Doing what they pleased in torturing and abusing humans within their territory. This angered Manasa. Naga were not supposed to be giving humans such grief.

In retribution, Manasa cursed this Naga clan. Cursed them with each suffering their own personal hell and anguish, just as they had caused the humans. For millennia, these Naga and their descendants have each suffered from a curse of their own personal torment, the only salve being that each generation got a more diluted form of the curse... that is until Krow came along.

For whatever reason, genetics just... played out differently and he got a bit more of the Naga bloodline and their traits, and also got a bit more of the curse. What is Krow's own "personal torment"? Well... family is the most important aspect to him. Essentially, he is doomed to never... really a happy family, or a happy life with family.

There hasn't been a way to break the curse, but there have been ways of mitigating it and managing it. If Krow was not taken from his bio parents, he would have grown up learning of his heritage and how to manage. But because he wasn't...

The curse essentially manifests primarily as extreme jealousy, clinging onto those he loves, or pushing away others (sometimes violently). This also explains some of his other traits (getting cold easily, a bit more strength, his teeth). Speaking of his teeth, Krow IS venomous. It's... a bit more diluted than it would be if he were a full Naga, but it's there all the same. His venom has a bit of an aphrodisiac effect on those affected by it. The more one is bitten, the more this takes effect. In essence, if Dove is one who likes being bitten by Krow, they will grow more and more comfortable in his presence unwittingly, writing off red flags and excusing some of his more problematic behaviors. ...Unfortunately though, it is still a venom. Get too much in your system, and it WILL kill you.

All of this to say, once Krow finds out all of this, that he's descended from a cursed Naga blood line and all these physical quirks, it would freak him out so badly that he would, yes, leave Dove in a desperate hope to protect them.

But yeah, that's the big secret I've been keeping hidden for the past couple years. I do have a hope to draw a "what if Krow was a full Naga" drawing at... some point.

I have been in discussion with some friends who are Indian and Bengali about all this. I tried to be as respectful about the culture as I could.

I think Krow steals floss from the dollar store if there’s no other way to get it but the mouthwash bottles are sometimes more difficult to boost…

So when he can’t get proper mouthwash maybe in an emergency he uses warm salty water, or if the food bank has given enough to have extra, does oil pulling. (Ideally using coconut oil but I don’t know how good the stuff Krow gets there is.)

Or maybe he makes an antibacterial infusion with herbs grown from free/cheap seeds at home or chews cloves or cardamom from cheap spice packets. Cloves or clove oil help slightly numb a toothache.

Though none of any of this is as good as a gentle alcohol free fluoride mouthwash and adult strength fluoride toothpaste. Cavities could abound.

He might have tried making toothpaste with bicarb soda, salt or charcoal (from his art supplies) but all of those are super abrasive and bad for your teeth. Sometimes he might have to resort to just dry brushing if he runs out.

Non-whitening fluoride toothpaste is the goal, hopefully there are mini tubes that are easy to palm or the food bank gives out basic hygiene products.

Does it? Does it give toothpaste and soap?

Krowspiracy once again giving more thought and detail to my characters than I am. /silly

But definitely I think this is all canon and viable.

I remember seeing stuff about like "what to donate instead of mac and cheese" articles and some items they mentioned have been hygiene stuff. Maybe the people of Columbidae have read those and been donating things like toothpaste and mouthwash and Krow can get those.

But he absolutely steals the like, travel size stuff too.

Reminds me of a lil fact that I think... I forgot to mention until now.

Even if Krow could afford it and had the means, he probably would still hesitate to go to a dentist. He doesn't want to hear from them how weird or unusual or "fascinating" his teeth are. He has a (maybe not so paranoid) fear that if one sees his teeth someone is gonna want to like, grab him and do research on them.

I wonder how far away Krow’s parents are. It would be tragic if this entire time they had still been in the same city or state.

Street Photographer!Dove interviews Krow for a local culture piece. When the newspaper comes out Krow’s parents happen to pick it up and see a young person with brown skin and purple eyes.

Funny you mention that, cause that WAS one of the things I've had in my noggin is that, ironically, Krow's parents have been still in the same state all this time (not living in Columbidae though.)

Naurrrr my heart. I love that though. Maybe some friends of Krow's parents got a copy of the paper, saw the photo and sent it over to them cause... maybe? It could be?

How does Krow normally act if he’s sick, from just stomach aches and colds to full on terrible fevers? Is he the type to suck it up and pretend he’s okay, does he like to be babied a bit and taken care of, or something in between? How accepting is he of getting help, from dove and others?

What are his preferences for treating being ill [does like taking a bunch of medicine? does like like relying on natural remedies? does he rest different than he usually does? What does he do?]

Is this man drawing while sick and getting snot all of the paper? Anyway yeah.

It kind of depends on the sickness and severity.

A little bit of sniffles he'll just suck it up and keep going. But if he has a nasty stomach bug or something where he's confined to the bed, he wouldn't mind a lil babying from Dove. (But this also does depend on the kind of sickness he has. Some he won't take babying, others he'll whine a little and want some extra attention.)

That also depends on what he has. A sore throat he'll just drink something like hot water with honey, lemon juice and ginger added to it and call it a day. He can't really afford to go to the doctor or get expensive, pricey medicines so he probably does rely on natural remedies a lot and probably just tends to rest/sleep more.

I forgot; but on what basis is Krows work?

Is it by commission kind of or does he have regular work hours and how long does he expect his work day to last usually? How much free time does his work leave him with btw, and where does he have to travel to for work? How’s his commute like?

Is his work clothes at his work or does Jen have to carry it with him? How is the process like for his work again and standards and procedures for work safety for him?

Also does he work weekends or is it an any time kind of thing [I imagine for this kinda work you wouldn’t want to extend the time frame because biohazard, but I’m wondering]

So Krow's work I always imagined as kind of commissioned based, but because it's a fairly large city, there's pretty much always some kind of work to be done.

While I've said that his main title is "forensic cleaner", Krow, Luke and the team don't just clean up murder scenes and not-so-well checks. I imagine they probably get commissioned to do other things too. Like maybe help with a hoarder's house, or a home that was abandoned, or someone did die (and yes the family/loved ones know) and perhaps there's a lot of stuff the family just doesn't want to deal with so hire them to clean it up. It's not just absolutely grisly, gruesome affairs. But of course, they have been hired to clean those up too. Krow, Luke and the others have seen... things.

Thus it just kind of... depends on what the day is like and how long it'll last? Sometimes they get emergency calls/commissions and have to go out on weekends or at odd hours. They do have a work van that hauls everyone and all their stuff around, then their office/base has all their supplies, showers and other things.

Luke does everything he can to make sure that all the safety protocols and procedures are in place. No cutting corners or making compromises on encroaching on his or any of his employees safety. So everyone is in suits, gloves, masks and the like. They hose down, shower, decontaminate and so on. Luke cares a LOT about his work and takes a LOT of pride in what he does and this reflects in his workers. It is hard work, and it IS gross, but because everyone is compensated pretty well and/or respected and treated like... a fucking person, people stick it out.

Like I said some emergency situations come up but generally Luke DOES really try to afford a good work life balance for those in his little company.

Krow just also dedicates his time to art and stalking Dove and murdering people so he may not have the best... time management and energy resource investment. Good thing you have lots of stamina birb boy.

How exactly does Krows venom function? I know it’s a slight aphrodisiac or at least it feels good, but what are the main effects and side effects and how does it kill specifically?

Also how strong are the side effects, is it addictive, how quickly would a regular person get addicted? What would be withdrawal symptoms?

Also how does it damage the body if it kills us? Does it just cause paralysis over time through nervous system, or just mess with our blood and destroy our blood vessels and cause internal bleeding , or does it damage our muscles? Or does it work in another strange mysterious way?

It's been kinda answered but maybe not in detail?

So in part I never really intended to apply too much real world science to Krow's venom since it's, well, it's Naga venom and while I can muddle about how some things work with the supernatural, I don't always go in TOO deep.

Krow's venom is pretty diluted, so folks bitten by Krow are not actually getting hit with as much of a heavy dose as they could if he were more Naga (or gods forbid, full blooded Naga).

Yes it has an aphrodisiac quality to it and it is, yes addictive. The full venom much worse so, but Krow's still nothing to sneeze at. Withdrawal symptoms hmmm... I am not super sure. I am not that familiar with what it's like to be without drugs for a length of time, so I am going to sound ignorant here, I apologize. I imagine one would feel real low, like not just sad, but down trodden. You don't feel good or yourself without the venom. You need it to feel "right" and fixed.

As for how it kills you, I always imagined Naga based around cobra's, which have a neurotoxin. So paralysis over time through nervous system and having respiratory failure eventually.

But folks are also welcome to headcanon other effects going on with his venom. If what I said isn't enough pizazz for you, go ahead and add a bit more sparkle to it. While there's some things I'd rather not know about with what folks headcanon about with Krow (I can't control that) it's still cool to see how peeps play dolls with him.

Does Krow ever exercise just by itself, not like physical activity from work or gardening or art endeavors or basic daily activities, but just exercise for the sake of exercise?

If I gotta be honest I don't think so. He really doesn't go to the gym or go for jogs/runs (even though he does enjoy walks). The exercise he gets is really from work, gardening and various art activities and walking. He considers that pretty good.
