Shoya left everything Selasi behind when she fled the planet. It was a conscious decision to make leaving it all behind easier. The only element left over from her family is a slight sense of spirituality. She wouldn’t go so far to call herself religious, but she does believe in supernatural forces.
15. Whatkinds of bad memories do they still have of their family?
...many. Shoya’s mother was ashamed of her by the time she left, and on the verge of disowning her just to save some face for herself. Shoya’s sister Isi was also very cruel to her, tormenting her at every opportunity and rubbing her successes in her face. Only Shoya’s brother Pala was still trying to be kind to her, but only in private; every time it mattered, he backed down and left her to deal with everything herself so he wouldn’t be any more connected to her than he was already. Shoya hated and resented all of them to varying degrees.

For a while, Shoya was her family’s secret. The fact that the Kasamalis had a child who couldn’t fly, couldn’t contribute to society... they would have loved to keep that quiet. But they couldn’t, of course. Beyond that, the Kasamalis were a pretty typical Selasi family. No skeletons in the closet.
14.What kinds of good memories do they still have of their family?
Before Indra’s death, Shoya has plenty of good memories with her brother and sister. They had a typical sibling relationship, bickering one moment and best friends the next. It wasn’t until Shoya truly began to struggle and lag behind in society that her relationship with her family really faltered.

The stars, definitely. She spent so long on Selasi staring up at them every night, waiting for the day she’d be traveling among them. They were a major inspiration for her and even now, she’ll sit in her ship just staring at them.

Shoya is... fine at math. It doesn’t come naturally to her, but she works very hard. She also gets a computer to help her with that as soon as she possibly can once she leaves Selasi.

DNA - What was your muse’s home life like?
For many years, it was perfectly happy. Like most Selasi families, the children were raised only by the mother; though they knew their father, he was nothing more than a friend. Shoya got along with her brother and sister, though they had their clashes.
After Indra’s death and Shoya’s terror of flying, it became significantly worse. She had to drop out of school, since all the studies relied on flight, which left her sitting around at home with nothing to do. She would hide out in her room, and was considered a burden on her family after a while. Her sister Isi in particular tormented her mercilessly. By the time Shoya left, it was a relief to be gone.
Fun Fact:
Shoya has an incredibly low caffeine tolerance. Two cups of coffee can kill her. She also has a lower tolerance for alcohol, though not to the same extreme. Since she actually enjoys the taste of alcohol, she does enjoy the occasional drink.

Shoya is an excellent liar, and there is almost no change in her voice. There might be a slight waver if she’s making something up on the spot, but if the lie is planned, she can do it near perfectly.
