I once put a check in a library book and forgot about it and returned it to the Harvard library. Someone found it and emailed me, which was very kind.
I was mentally going over the books I returned and praying that none of them were Interlibrary Loans, because at least if they were staying at my library, I’d have a chance of recovering said check.
I was also mentally preparing my speech to the board and the donor explaining that I’m actually the worst and shouldn’t be in charge of important detail-oriented things, but please let me continue to be in charge of your children on a very regular basis.
Also, my memory simply cannot be trusted. I would never have looked inside this book on my own because I would have SWORN to you that the book I was reading that day was a hardback book. (It wasn’t.)
