Headcanons; On Fighting
[[ The thread with purehcrted got me thinking about Yondu on the battlefield, and extended HCs connected to such. It’s gonna be long, buckle in.
➳The most obvious place to start, the Yaka Arrow. I’m still working out my personal thoughts as to where it came from, but until Word of God says otherwise my thoughts are thus; the fin and yaka arrow were created at some point after Stakar brought Yondu into the Ravager fold.
It was created for two reasons; one, it was a weapon only he could control, giving the wild and uprooted former battle slave something that was entirely his and couldn’t be taken away.
Two, the connections it had to his Centaurian roots; as much as he would be loathe to even think about it, being taken from his people and having his fin hacked off was devastating. Yondu’s sense of identity was ripped away both physically and mentally. He feels doesn’t belong with his people, an essential part of him was taken away. The replacement fin filled that place just a little bit; it helped rid him of that phantom limb feeling. The rift between himself and his people isn’t healed and may never be (half thanks to his own sore feelings about them,) but the fin and yaka arrow (modeled after traditional Centaurian weaponry) helped fill that void.
➳ If the yaka arrow is ever out of commission, he prefers hand to hand combat over other weapons. Yes, he can use guns, blades, and is actually very proficient with bo staff-like weaponry, his preferred weapon is himself. Several different HCs feed off this-
➳ As stated above, he can use other weapons but doesn’t like it too much. The one exception is the yaka arrow, which he sees and feels as just an extension of himself. Won’t stop him from shooting someone if he has the chance, but guns feel uncomfortable to him. Unless they are the guns of a ship; when he is flying, he sees and feels the ship and its weaponry as an extension of himself like he does the yaka arrow.
➳ Once, he was one of many living weapons for the Kree empire. Now, he is his own weapon, and he’s the only one who can wield himself. While he loathes the Kree and everything to do with them, he’s not about to drop something as useful as his battle training. Hell, he might not be able to. The training was beaten into him since childhood, fighting isn’t just something he learned how to do, it was a way of life. It’s a part of him now, and he’s fully integrated it into his sense of self. To Yondu, using the skills forced onto him by the Kree in whatever way he wants almost feels as if he were stealing from them. And he very much enjoys that feeling.
➳ It wasn’t an easy road to “I am my own weapon.” Like any trauma, near two decades of being a battle slave had its toll on him and it took years to change his mindset into a healthier one. As a stopover to complete ownership of himself, he saw himself as Stakar&Aleta’s weapon. Getting his own ship and starting his own clan was a huge stepping stone into true freedom.
➳ It took a long time for Yondu to learn how to control himself. Kree battle slaves are not taught restraint; you kill the enemy and obey the masters. There is no mercy, not for you nor from you. The first Ravager to try and take on the ‘skinny little upstart’ that Stakar brought on board learned this the hard way; had Stakar not stepped in, he would have gotten his ribcage crushed in. That Ravager may have just been trying to put Yondu in his place, but to Yondu a fight meant to the death.
➳ Being Centaurian was a boon, in this case. Centaurians are a very spiritual people, with gifts for empathy and sensing, able to reach heightened states of consciousness. Stakar brought in someone to teach Yondu how to meditate; and while Yondu hated the idea of taking anything from what he saw as the people who abandoned him, he had no choice. Meditation did wonders to help Yondu calm and control the fury inside him; and nowadays, he is in complete control of himself. Where once he would let himself fall into a red fury and destroy everything and everyone in his wake, he is able to direct that fury into a deadly focus.
➳ Despite all this, he doesn’t think of himself as a weapon anymore. He’s a sentient person, a Centaurian, a Ravager, he knows this. But he also knows he was trained and honed as a weapon, he knows that he is deadly and precise, and he absolutely uses it - be it to intimidate or destroy.
➳ You know he’s irrevocably pissed with you when he puts down the yaka arrow and brings up his fists. Yondu doesn’t play around. His reputation alone is enough to let him intimidate most people into submission; but if you do something that really pisses him off, all bets are off. Whether the offender lives or dies depends on the severity of the transgression and how much Yondu likes them.]]

28. Who do they see as their best friend? Their worst enemy?[[Best friend - though he’d prefer to just say ‘closest person to him’ - is Kraglin. Krags is privvy to a lot of things Yondu wouldn’t dare share with anyone else - the full extent of his inborn Centaurian abilities, the fact that he’s prone to migraines, how he has to meditate sometimes to make them go away. Hell, Krags even has free access to the Captain’s quarters.
[[As for enemy… personally there’s no one he considers a worst enemy. Some people - even on his own crew - are gunning for him, sure, but he doesn’t see them as enemies. Just people he has to watch and potentially destroy if they overstep.
[[The Kree? Well, he doesn’t like any of them. They are an enemy in his mind. But beyond the persistent underlying fear of them (stemming from PTSD) he refuses to view them as more than an annoyance.
[[But when you bring Quill into the picture, it’s Ego. That fucker isn’t getting anywhere near Quill. He’d readily give his own life to keep Quill out of Ego’s hands haha oh wait ]]
29. Reaction to sudden extrapersonal disaster (eg The house is on fire! What do they do?)[[He takes charge, immediately. It’s almost like an instinct by now; something goes wrong, Captain’s gotta fix it. Yondu is skilled at keeping cool under pressure.
[[So if, say, part of the Eclector caught fire, he wouldn’t even give his men a chance to panic. Cut off the fuel lines. Evac the area, NOW. You have five seconds til we vent the sector into space. Move it or lose it.]]
37. Are they more analytical or more emotional in their decision-making?[[A mix of both; largely dependent on the scenario. In most cases, he’s analytical. ‘What course of action would most benefit me’ type of thinking. That’s the ideal situation.
[[But, things are often less than ideal. With Quill, or with anyone he cares about, his decisions are strictly emotional. He will do reckless things to protect them if need be, and will do hurtful things to push them away if they get too close. He absolutely would have killed Quill if he’d truly ever been forced too, but there’s a reason he always hesitates; gives the boy a chance to talk his way out of it.
[[Likewise with his men; if one of their lives are on the line and he can do something about it (assuming they don’t fully deserve what’s coming to them) he will step in and intervene. Even he views this as a weakness. But it keeps at least part of the crew loyal, though ensured loyalty isn’t the only reason he does so.]]
40. Would you say that they have a superiority-complex? Inferiority-complex? Neither?[[Minor inferiority complex, much as he would hate to admit it. He knows he’s a badass; he’s the Captain of a Ravager clan, he’s got the deadliest weapon on his ship, he’s a notorious criminal. He’s got a track record. People are terrified of him.
[[And yet every time he looks in the mirror, all he sees is garbage. Someone who isn’t good enough, hasn’t done enough, won’t ever measure up. Someone who had everything and lost it because they were stupid and greedy. Someone who deserves the worst.
[[And thing is, he is very confident in his abilities. As I said above, he doesn’t think he’s hot shit, he knows he’s hot shit. But he still looks at himself and thinks ‘not good enough’ and it frustrates the hell out of him. So, he doesn’t think about it.]]

➳ Yondu keeps six plants in the Captain’s quarters. They’re hidden away; Kraglin may or may not know about them. They were all likely found and destroyed in the mutiny.
➳ If Stakar tried to kill him, he wouldn’t fight back. Stakar is the only person he would never lift a hand against, even if somehow the other man deserved it. Unless he was threatening Quill, in which case Yondu would choose Quill.
➳ Yondu can actually understand Groot thanks to his Centaurian abilities. He chooses not to reveal this fact, and just lets Rocket translate for him.

➳ If Yondu actually develops romantic feelings for someone, he will not sleep with them. Not unless he’s sloshed, or by some miracle the other person confronted him on his avoidance and won.
And by avoidance, I don’t mean avoidance of physical intimacy; I mean he will put up a goddamn wall, and if that person tries to take said wall down he’ll hurt them. Any way he can.
