Yusuke Kitagawa is a second year honor student in the fine-arts division of Kosei High School. He is a very intelligent and elegant, tending to speak a bit poetically even when in a casual setting. While a large portion of this is just his personality, Yusuke was also taught some of these traits from his Sensei.
Yusuke has been living in famous artist Ichiryusai Madarame’s shack as his last remaining art pupil. While it would seem like a dream come true for the aspiring artist, Yusuke has been through a horrible amount of mistreatment. The young artist has become a victim of plagiarism due to his mentor’s supposed ‘slump’. Not only that, but Yusuke has been abused by Madarame since he was young. His distance from his peers and the scars that he keeps hidden just below his shirt are evidence of this abuse, but the young artist continuously denies all accusations that are made about Madarame.
Not only is Madarame his art mentor, but he is also the man who adopted Yusuke after his mother’s passing when he was only 3 years old. Yusuke never knew his father, so Madarame was easily able to take that role in his life. This has given him a seemingly strong bond with his mentor, making Yusuke cover his eyes to Madarame’s crimes and make excuses for his poor treatment.
When he finally comes to accept what Madarame truly is, he awakens to his persona and decides to help the Phantom Thieves with changing his mentor’s heart. However, this doesn’t take away all of the damage that was left behind.
Personality
Yusuke has a way of presenting himself as an elegant and poised individual. He speaks quite poetically, but has a tendency to unintentionally offend people with his lack of understanding when it comes to people and social cues. He is initially rather serious, taking extra care to be polite when he meets new people since that was how he was brought up. However, underneath all of this he is actually a pretty quirky individual.
He was raised very sheltered, so Yusuke tends to be very open about his thoughts and opinions, making him seem blunt or even rude on occasion when he speaks without thinking of the consequences. His passion for art also shows more often then not, making him admittedly quite eccentric. Even still, he is a loyal and trustworthy friend who will go above and beyond for the people he cares about and wants to protect.
Mannerisms/Habits
Yusuke has quite a few bad habits, one being the bluntness that he tends to have when talking to people. While he doesn’t know any better, it does tend to rub people the wrong way before they take the time to get to know him. He also rarely eats, which is a large part of him very slim figure. He instead chooses to spend his money on either his art supplies or on other people. While his strong loyalty and care for his friends shows his kind and caring side, it does cause a lot of concern among the people that know him.
Being an aspiring artist, he also has a borderline-obsession with aesthetics. He is noticeably kinder and more polite to people that he finds beautiful or aesthetically pleasing, and he tends to be more uncomfortable or displeased when he is in a place that he deems not to have the proper aesthetics.
