Avery Thomas was born to two very happy and goofy parents in Chengdu, China. Her father, from America, learnt Mandarin and started teaching it to her with her mother every single day. It was just the three of them and while they didn’t have much money, they were happy. Avery was a happy and healthy baby girl, and even though their neighbors would scowl at them for naming Avery something ‘too white’, they never seemed to care.
When Avery was only two years old, both of her parents died in a car accident. Neither Noah or Mingyu had extended family so Avery went immediately into the system. Because so many people were interested in adopting from China, someone immediately signed up to foster her. Her foster parents were in Canada, and once she got there they decided they did not want her anymore. She was too old and too quiet. They wanted a happy baby, and Avery was not that.
Instead of shipping Avery back to China, she stayed in Canada in the foster care system and bounced around from home to home. No one ever wanted her due to the color of her skin and that she was white, but not ‘white enough’. Avery was getting more and more difficult to deal with and was acting out a lot more often so it was even harder to get someone to adopt her.
When Avery was eight years old, the Devereaux family took interest in her. They’d already had a twenty-two year old son by the name of Aiden, but they wanted to help her. They’d heard her story and took a chance on her. Because her parents never gave her a middle name, when they adopted Avery they put her official name is Avery Dominique Devereaux, which coincidentally matched their sons name.
Avery was still acting out, but both Jackson and Gabrielle were patient with her. They never took anything seriously, and they gave Avery enough room to grow but to know that they were there for her. Avery missed what she remembered of her birthparents, but Jackson and Gabrielle quickly became her actual parents.
Entering high school, Avery was finally able to branch out and be herself. Thanks to her parents, she was silly with an attitude to boot. She fell in love with watching films, wanting to learn how to make them herself. Star Wars was a favorite of hers, and when she saw it the first time she’d decided it was the best movie series of all time.
Avery thankfully got close with her brother Aiden despite their age difference. When it was time for her to settle down, she knew she wanted to keep close to Aiden. Moving to Chicago was an absolute no brainer.
She’s currently going to DePaul university as a film major, and bartending at the strip club that her brother owns, Sapphire. She’s in a longterm relationship with Max and she’s just really happy -- finally, after her shitstorm of a life.
