Oliver was born in Stirling, Scotland into a family of jockeys and horse trainers. It was expected that he would follow in the multi-generational tradition of becoming a jockey, but by age 11 he had exceeded the height requirements of jockeys and never lived it down. Where most kids would have been teased for being short, all the kids at school teased Oliver for being the only one over 5’5” in his family. His father was disappointed and, no matter how much Oliver’s mum assured him he wasn’t, Oliver could see it in his eyes.
Considering how different he was from his father and his younger brother, the rumour mill in Stirling often brought up the idea that maybe his father wasn’t really his father. Oliver dedicated his life to learning to train horses to make sure he was still able to be a part of his family’s business and follow along with what his great-great grandfather had established all those years ago.
At age 16, Oliver came out to his mother that he was bisexual (at the time that was what he identified as) and his mother convinced him to not tell his father, knowing full well the older bigot didn’t need another reason to resent his eldest son. He met and fell in love with his current spouse when they were in the final years of high school, deciding to get married on their 10th anniversary (6 years ago), but it became clear after a year of marriage the two weren’t necessarily interested in exclusive monogamy. They loved each other and still do to this day, so they decided to open their marriage and practice ethical non-monogamy. They have a set of rules in place to make sure each is comfortable with their arrangement, including not having partners come to their marital home and have health checks every month with their GP.
One night Oliver’s father walked into the family office to find Oliver in a rather awkward position with another male member of staff and he was immediately disowned. Cut out of the family’s money and business, Oliver knew he needed a fresh start somewhere else. He and his spouse decided to move Stateside and they first tried Texas, but eventually Oliver found a job with Aysel as a horse trainer and part-time horse riding instructor.
Oliver stands at a respectable 6’7” and is incredibly clumsy. It’s almost as if his body isn’t quite sure where his arms and legs are going all at once. He is often seen with bruises on his legs and elbows, unsure of where they came from. Because of his family’s affiliation with horse-racing, Oliver has gotten himself into trouble a few times with Scottish bookies, owing them a fair bit of money his mother paid off for him before he left for the states. Even after getting himself into a hole of debt, Oliver will often bet on horses when he feels bored or anxious.
