Above Avalon’s Apple Q419 Revenue Guidance Expectation Meter
Neil Cybart for Above Avalon:
Apple finds itself in a financial tug-of-war as declining iPhone revenue is being offset by growth in every other product category. When Apple reports 3Q19 earnings on Tuesday, we will get the latest snapshot of how this tug-of-war is playing itself out.
While the press remains infatuated with the storyline that slowing iPhone sales are driving Apple to become a…

Apple Watch: The war for wearables is over, and Apple won
“The Apple Watch conquered all comers and became the most important wearable in the world in 2017,” Brett Williams writes for Mashable. “The iPhone maker flexed its muscles to take over the young wearable space in a relatively short period. Apple only released its first smartwatch in April 2015, and its latest, the Series 3, is just the third iteration of the device.”
“‘Apple has…

It’s time for Apple to disclose Apple Watch sales
“Apple Watch is a resounding success, and it’s time for Apple to make it official by providing quarterly sales data. The question of whether Apple should disclose Apple Watch sales has never had a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer. Instead, the positives and negatives found with disclosure have to be weighed against each other,” Neil Cybart writes for Above Avalon. “There is now more upside found in…

Apple isn’t working on a car, they’re working on something much bigger
“UBS’s Steven Milunovich consulted with two notable Apple Inc. experts to gain further perspective on the company’s outlook,” Jayson Derrick reports for Benzinga. “The analyst met with Asymco’s Horace Dediu and Above Avalon’s Neil Cybart, both of whom are positive on Apple’s business.”
“Dediu highlighted the fact that the automotive market is valued at anywhere from $5 trillion to $15…

No more Apple Tax: The curious state of Apple's product pricing
No more Apple Tax: The curious state of Apple’s product pricing
“As Apple pushes deeper into luxury brand territory, the company is making its products more accessible through lower pricing,” Neil Cybart writes for Above Avalon. “At $159, Apple is underpricing AirPods. The same can be said for Apple Watch, priced at $269. In just ten years, we have moved from the ‘Apple Tax’ days, when Apple was accused of pricing products artificially high, to Apple products…

Being able to spend $10 billion on R&D is sick. What’s more sick is it’s only 5% of Apple’s revenue
Apple is now on track to spend more than $10 billion on R&D in 2016, up nearly 30% from 2015 and ahead of even my aggressive estimate. This is a remarkable feat considering that Apple was spending a little over $3 billion per year on R&D just four years ago.
...
The most shocking aspect about the amount of money Apple is spending on R&D is how little attention it has garnered in Silicon Valley and on Wall Street. Other than my R&D post last year, there is rarely any mention of Apple's R&D, and this doesn't seem to make much sense.
...
Apple's product secrecy is a key ingredient of its success. People like to be surprised. Another reason Apple takes a much different approach to product secrecy and R&D is its business model. Being open about future product plans will likely have a negative impact on near-term Apple hardware sales.
