Allures by Jordan Belson (1961)
A metaphor of creation. Spirals, circles, and abstract forms move against alternating dark and light backgrounds. An orb changes color, appearing in flash frames. Dots resembling stars or atoms and galaxies with shooting stars are created on the screen. The stars then order themselves into lines. Exploding sunbursts end the film. The film includes interference pattern imagery Belson created for the famous San Francisco Vortex Concerts (1959-1960). "I think of Allures as a combination of molecular structures and astronomical events mixed with subconscious and subjective phenomena - all happening simultaneously. the beginning is almost purely sensual, the end perhaps totally nonmaterial. It seems to move from matter to spirit in some way." - Belson Credits: Soundtrack - Henry Jacobs and Jordan Belson
Part avant-garde animator, part optical alchemist, part mystic, part psychologist of perception, Belson made more than 30 short films between the late 1940s and 2005, all of which defy ready classification.
Wordless, they employ moving, abstract images of mercurial fluidity painstakingly choreographed to music. As they slowly change size, form, color and direction, the images rivet the eye.
